VA Local Basketball Poll, Westfield #1..again? #8 Garfield Edges #6 Potomac, 67-65
Westfield just got done dominating VA High School football…now Gameday Magazine has them ranked #1 in their 2008 Basketball Poll. Do you agree? Send us some comments on any of the Gameday Magazine Top 10. We will gather polls from other outlets in the coming days.

Westfield halfway through the year has shown to be the best team in the region. Wins over Liberty, Edison, Woodson, West Mecklenberg, and South Lakes prove that fact while their lone loss came at the hands of Lake Braddock. Not only is Mo Hubbard providing a scoring punch, but so too is Jamie Richardson and Jon Gaston, making this team a scary one to face.

The lone team with a perfect record in the Northern Region are the Chargers. Yet the one thing holding this team back from being in the number one spot is their schedule. To date, their one test on the year has been Lee, whom they beat by ten points but until they knock off more of the top teams, this team will continue to sit in the passenger seat of the Power Poll.
3. HYLTON CLICK HERE FOR HYLTON BULLDOG HIGHLIGHTS ON LOCALREPLAY.COM
As of now, Hylton hasn’t lost to a Virginia public school, and as a result they’ve emerged as a leading contender for the Northwest Region title. Convincing wins over Edison, Herndon, and Culpeper have certainly made this team out to be for real, but they still have to go through the Cardinal District teams of Gar-Field and Potomac. How well this team does from here on out remains to be seen, but all signs indicate this team is here to stay.
4. MILLBROOK
Millbrook looks to be the king of Region II as the tandem of Jordan Sugars and Erick Green look to be unstoppable at this point. The closest any team has gotten to Millbrook was Jefferson County (W.Va) and they lost by 10. This is a team that could very well go undefeated for the entirety of their season. The one drawback holding this team back however, is they play against a weaker schedule than some of their AAA counterparts. Still, this is one of the best teams this area has to offer and you can bet Gameday will be following this team as the year progresses.
5. TC WILLIAMS: CLICK HERE FOR TC WILLIAMS TITANS HIGHLIGHTS ON LOCALREPLAY.COM
If it wasn’t for an early season loss to rival Edison, the Titans would very well be sitting atop the Power Poll. Yet since that loss, TC has been on a tear as they’ve beaten Woodson, West Potomac, Wise (Md.), and Lee, making this team still seem every bit the contender they were made out to be. A tough contest with Montrose Christian looms, and you can bet Gameday will have you covered on that one. If TC would be able to pull off the upset, make no doubt about it, this would undoubtedly be the top team in this area.
6. POTOMACLOCALREPLAY.COM @ GARFIELD TUESDAY NIGHT!
Potomac has played only five games up until now thanks in part to their football team’s run to the state title, so the jury is still mainly out on this team. In the games Potomac has played, the Panthers suffered a loss to Hayfield but do have a strong win against Mount Vernon on their résumé. Year in and year out, this team is a contender so we’ll be keeping Potomac on the Power Poll until they fall off.
7. MADISON
Madison in every way, shape, and form has the makings of a Northern Region championship team. Losing only to El Torro out of California, Madison has racked up very convincing wins over South Lakes and Herndon. Led by Omi Ogolo and Colin Flaherty and another whole cast of supporting players, Madison is quite a dangerous team. If they can successfully get through the heart of their district schedule without suffering too many losses, Madison will have to be looked upon as a favorite to reach the Patriot Center.
8. GAR-FIELD LOCALREPLAY.COM @ GARFIELD TUESDAY NIGHT!
Gar-Field is surely playing the role as a Northwest Region title contender and now they look to be one of the premier teams in the area. The Indians might not be battle-tested but if they can get through Cardinal District foes Hylton and Potomac unscathed, then we can know whether or not this team is for real. Until then, this team will have to sit towards the bottom of the Power Poll.
9. WEST POTOMAC
Quietly making their way through the ranks is West Potomac. In a crowded field of Patriot District contenders, West Potomac has risen to the occasion with wins over Mount Vernon, Hayfield, and Lake Braddock. How this team does in the brutal Patriot District could spell the fate of this team come tourney time, but by the looks of it, it appears West Potomac will do some damage.
10. Langley LOCALREPLAY.COM WILL BE @ WOODSON for LANGLEY GAME ON FRIDAY NIGHT!
Anyone doubting Langley’s record may need to put those doubts aside. After an impressive win over South Lakes, a game in which they led from start to finish, the Saxons proved they have the makings of a Top 10 team. With so many key contributors on this Langley team, they have the depth and talent, something that couldn’t be said for last year’s squad. As with Madison, if they can escape district play relatively unharmed, this team will be a handful in regionals.

Despite a huge win against Westfield, losses to Lee, West Potomac, and Herndon have drastically dropped the value of this team.

Another exceptional team out of the Patriot whose record has suffered as a result of having to play top competition. But like Lake Braddock, this team has great potential to sneak into the Power Poll.

The Seahawks have fell victim to three teams ranked in our Power Poll, but they have taken care of business of every other team they’ve faced.
Loudoun Valley: Valley is one of those teams that is extremely tough to get a read on. This team has had two bad losses to Loudoun County and Osbourn Park, but did beat Liberty and Yorktown with ease. How they do against Culpeper will in fact tell us a lot more about this team.
The Dulles District: Simply put, the Dulles District has been very disappointing. Unable to hold their own against any AAA team, it’s tough to picture any team getting consideration for the Power Poll. Not to mention the Dulles is defined by parity, so the fact that every team beats up on each other makes it even tougher to find a team worthy of entering the Power Poll. But we will put up the entire Dulles District in the honorable mention category in hopes that one team will eventually emerge as a contender.
