Gameday Power Poll: Week 11
By Derek Lecomte
November 13, 2007

1. WESTFIELD 11-0
Previous: 1
Up Next: vs. West Potomac

Staying in the #1 spot for the eleventh consecutive week are the Westfield Bulldogs. As they’ve done all year, they dominated the opposition as they took out South County 40-14 last Friday in the opening round of playoffs. Westfield will get a tougher test next week however when they line up against a healed and energized West Potomac team that just knocked off fourth-seeded Lake Braddock.

2. SHERANDO 10-0
Previous: 2
Up Next: vs. James Wood

Sherando was on a bye last week, but they’re looking to pick things up right where they left off when their “Second Season” begins this Friday. The Warriors are matched up with district foe James Wood in the first round, a team they beat earlier in the year 28-13, but getting the ‘W’ might be tougher the second time around. Look for a possible battle out in Stephens City this Friday.

3. STONE BRIDGE 11-0
Previous: 3
Up Next: vs. Marshall

The Bulldogs, much like their other canine friends at Westfield, got by the first round of the playoffs with ease as they topped Lee 42-13. Up next for Stone Bridge are the Marshall Statesmen, who are riding a tidal wave of momentum after they’ve won six of their last seven, including an upset of Madison on the road. Stone Bridge meanwhile is just one win away from advancing to their third straight Northern Region championship game.

4. POTOMAC 10-0
Previous: 4
Up Next: vs. Fauquier

Potomac locked up the #1 seed in the Division 5 Northwest Region with a 42-0 shutout win over Freedom-Woodbridge. Potomac is still getting the job done with their punishing running attack, and at this point, they’ve successfully established themselves as a legitimate state title contender.

5. BATTLEFIELD 9-1
Previous: 6
Up Next: vs. Woodbridge

With a 42-27 win over Loudoun Valley, Battlefield was able to secure the top seed in the Division 6 Northwest Region playoffs. With that being said, they now have to set their sights on Woodbridge as they try to get their first playoff win in school history.

6. BROAD RUN 10-0
Previous: 8
Up Next: vs. #9 Park View

With Broad Run’s huge 21-14 win over Park View, they jump up two spots in the Power Poll. The Spartans aren’t done with Park View just yet though. They now have to face them a second time this Friday in the opening round of the playoffs, and you can be sure Park View will be planning on a little revenge.

7. EDISON 8-2
Previous: 10
Up Next: at #10 Madison

Edison leaps three spots in this week’s Power Poll after beating district rival Yorktown 48-18. It’s now off to #10-ranked Madison where Edison could get the chance to play in their fourth straight Northern Region Division 5 championship game.

8. WEST SPRINGFIELD 9-2
Previous: NR
Up Next: vs. Robinson

Out of all of this week’s fantastic finishes, perhaps none was greater than West Springfield’s 30-27 come-from-behind win. Time after time, the Spartan offense has showed us that they can score at will and last Friday was no exception. Now going up against upstart Robinson, West Springfield will need to have that offense in high gear again on Friday.

9. PARK VIEW 9-1
Previous: 7
Up Next: at #6 Broad Run

After their 21-14 loss to #6 Broad Run, Park View falls several spots to #9 in the Power Poll. The Patriots though can serve that loss justice with a win this week as they go up against their rivals for the second week in a row. Expect a focused and determined squad to show up for this Friday’s rematch.

10. MADISON 9-2
Previous: NR
Up Next: vs. #7 Edison

Jumping back into the Power Poll are the Madison Warhawks who showed signs of life after they defeated South Lakes 35-6. They have a much tougher test this Friday however when they face a physical and attacking Edison squad. With the win, Madison would have the chance to win their first region title since 2003.

OTHERS RECEIVING VOTES:

FAUQUIER 8-2: Falling out of the Power Poll are the Falcons who suffered a 33-27 loss to rival Liberty in the annual Bird Bowl last Friday. Despite the loss, Fauquier’s season continues as they managed to qualify for the playoffs where they have a first round meeting with #4 Potomac.

MILLBROOK 8-2: Millbrook got the week off as they had a bye, but it’s back to work for the Pioneers who go up against Briar Woods for the second time this season. Earlier in the year, Briar Woods beat Millbrook by the score of 41-0, but don’t expect nearly the same outcome on Friday.

JAMES WOOD 8-2: Like their Northwestern District brethren, James Wood was off this week, but they return to action against #2 Sherando in the Division 6 Region II semi-finals.

WEST POTOMAC 8-3: West Potomac starts to get some consideration for the Power Poll again after they dominated Lake Braddock in the opening round of the playoffs. With West Potomac’s key players all back from injury, this team now has the makings of a solid contender.
