Virginia & DC METRO High School Sports: Herndon 2-Point Conversion Completes Rally as Hornets Sting Oakton 35-34, Chantilly Upends Edison 21-14: LocalReplay.com HIGHLIGHTS & All Scores, All Sports!

Herndon Hornets Celebrate 35-34 Victory

For those who did not surrender to the cold weather on Friday night…good for you, it was well worth it. In what proved to be the the game of the night, and maybe the year, the 4-5 Herndon Hornets provided their Seniors with a night they will never forget at “The Nest”.

Senior Night at Herndon got off to a solid start as their Senior RB, Desmond Siefu scored on a nifty 18 yard TD run. The Hornets were up 7-0 early only to see the Oakton Cougars (5-4) score the next 21 points to lead at halftime, 21-7. The Cougars were led by star Junior RB, Johnathan Meadows who scored on two first half touchdowns runs (5,9) and led the Oakton rushing attack with 114 yards on just 16 carries.

Many were probably considering an early departure to the warm comfort of their homes, but this was Senior Night, and Herndon needed this game to keep their playoffs hopes alive. How could anyone leave on Senior Night anyway? Nobody did, and the Hornets would not dissappoint.

Herndon broke out their air attack and before you could blink an eye, they had the lead in the 3rd Qtr at 27-21. Sophmore QB Zach Ozycz hooked up with Senior WR, Nicco Berry, on two stop & go touchdown passes of 25 & 34 yards. Those two TDs sandwiched a spectacular 70 yard scamper to the endzone by Senior Herndon RB, Chris Winston. Game on! All of a sudden, the Hornet faithful were no longer feeling the bite of the cold but instead felt the reward for their patience.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Oakton Junior RB Trey Watts handled the Hernon kickoff and raced 77 yards to paydirt. A missed extra point helped keep a little momentum on the home team side, but Cougars were back. The 3rd quarter finally ended, and it was time for a 4th Quarter to remember.

Both defenses played the “bend but do not break” approach and the scoring barrage slowed down considerably. However, with under 5 mintes left, speedy Junior Oakton QB Chris Coyer broke the trend and seemingly the hearts of the home crowd as he sprinted past Herdon defenders for a 75 yard TD run. Oakton was now ahead 34-27 and only 4 minutes remained for the Hornets to rally once again, for their season and for their Seniors. QB Zach Ozycz showed thesenior poise as the Sophmore teamed up with RB Chris Winston to lead the Herndon to the Cougar 1 yard line with just 15 seconds left. After calling time-out, Ozycz bullied his way over the plane and a crowd of Cougars, and the scoreboard read 34-33 Oakton with 11 seconds to go. Ok, time for extra point and overtime, right? Not so much.

Maybe Coach Joseph Scheaffer was getting sick of the cold, but he ordered the Hornet offense to stay on the field. Herndon was going for 2, they were going for the win. An anxious, excited Herndon sidelines seemed to all be on board with Coach’s courageous decision, and the fans eagerly awaited their team’s final offensive play….for all the marbles. The call was a sweep right to Winston, and it felt like all was in slow motion. Oakton defenders read the play well and Winston realized he would have to lower his head and shoulders to brace himself for a collision and a struggle to the end zone. Two Cougars looked as though they had Winston wrapped up, but the Senior RB generated just enough push and referees confirmed by signaling a successful 2 point conversion. The play was as close as they come, and Oakton argued to no avail.

The scoreboard now read 35-34, Herndon on top. Comeback complete. After getting the ball at the Herndon 20, the Cougars could not muster any threat, and the game was officially over. Wow.

Hornets’ players, coaches & cheerleaders rushed the field in a frenzy as a shocked Oakton team watched in disbelief. What a game, what a finish and thank goodness we could go home…overtime would have been tough to endure only because of the dipping temperature, but this game would have been impossible to leave.
