Gameday Power Poll: Week 7
By Derek Lecomte
October 15, 2007
1. WESTFIELD 7-0
Previous: 1
Next Up: vs. Herndon
No surprise here, as Westfield successfully holds onto the number spot in the Power Poll with a 45-6 win over Fairfax. Expect the Bulldogs to retain their number one ranking next week when 2-5 Herndon comes into town.
2. CHANTILLY 6-1
Previous: 2
Next Up: at Fairfax
Since losing to #1 Westfield last month, Chantilly has slowly gotten progressively better each week. Their 41-21 smashing of highly ranked Robinson last week is proof of that, and this team looks as if it is slowly drawing itself to the level of Westfield.
3. SHERANDO 7-0
Previous: 3
Next Up: at James Wood
Sherando at this point is rolling through their Northwestern District schedule. They easily dismantled Skyline 61-0 last week, making that the fifth time in the last six games that they have scored more than 40 points on an opponent. James Wood presents a more difficult challenge this week, but as of now, Sherando is turning into a juggernaut of AA football.
4. STONE BRIDGE 6-1
Previous: 4
Next Up: vs. #7 Madison
After whipping up on some of their weaker district foes, what does Stone Bridge do when they go up against a quality opponent? Well, they whip up on them too. Last week they beat up on Langley 42-14 as they seem to be on cruise control at this point. For Madison, this is not the time to face this football team.
5. POTOMAC 7-0
Previous: 6
Next Up: at Gar-Field
Like we said earlier in the year, Potomac could very well be a top five team. Now that they’ve successfully proven themselves, we feel silly for not ranking them so high earlier in the year. Potomac justified their spot in the poll by beating Woodbridge 17-5, making that the fifth game in a row in which they’ve won by two touchdowns or more. Only #8 Battlefield has played Potomac close the entire year.
6. FAUQUIER 6-0
Previous: 8
Next Up: at Stonewall Jackson
Fauquier moves up two spots this week thanks in part to West Springfield losing and Park View slipping up a bit. Their 20-14 victory over Osbourn last week still solidifies this team as a top contender in the Northwest Region. Yet with Ryan Williams returning for Stonewall Jackson next week, the Falcons might need to proceed with caution.
7. MADISON 7-0
Previous: 9
Next Up: at #4 Stone Bridge
Also moving up two spots this week are the Madison Warhawks. After playing several weaker opponents, Madison has just put down two quality opponents in Langley and Woodson. Next week however will be the ultimate test for this team when they go toe-to-toe with Stone Bridge. Stone Bridge has never lost to Madison, but this is the best team Madison has fielded in nearly five years.
8. BATTLEFIELD 5-1
Previous: NR
Next Up: vs. Osbourn
Making their first appearance into the Gameday Power Poll are the Battlefield Bobcats. Since losing to #5 Potomac in the first week of the season, the Bobcats have rattled off five straight wins, including last week’s 31-6 win over Liberty. Slowly but surely, Battlefield has successfully established themselves as a threat to win the Northwest Region.
9. PARK VIEW 6-0
Previous: 7
Next Up: vs. Briar Woods
Park View last week barely escaped with a 21-14 win over Potomac Falls. The win was enough to still ensure them a spot in the Power Poll, but their play did cause them to drop several spots. With Briar Woods up next week, expect head coach Andy Hill to get his troops back in line.
10. BROAD RUN 6-0
Previous: 10
Next Up: vs. Loudoun County
The Spartans stay right where they are in the Power Poll after their 34-17 win over Dominion. With Loudoun County due up for Broad Run, expect this team to continue their winning ways.
ALSO RECEIVING VOTES:
EDISON 6-1: Edison coasted to an easy 53-7 victory over winless Stuart. Only until the Eagles face #2 Chantilly in three weeks will this team be challenged again.
WEST SPRINGFIELD 5-2: With the Spartans losing 35-31 to South County in a shocking upset, this squad was forced to drop out of the top 10. A convincing win over upstart Lake Braddock however could get this team ranked again.
LAKE BRADDOCK 6-1: Still don’t know what to make of the Bruins? Well, take their 41-0 rout of West Potomac as evidence that this can play. If they can topple West Springfield in a few weeks, we will know that this team means business.
Click here for Lake Braddock Football Local Replay highlights versus West Potomac this past weekend. Highlights courtesy of Sean Broadus at LocalReplay.com.
BRIAR WOODS 5-1: A win over Park View this week and you can be sure to see the Falcons get catapulted into the Top 10. As for now however, they are just hanging out and laying low in our Power Poll.
