Greyhounds nip Boo in the end

July 30th, 2007 Posted in AAU Basketball

Late on Saturday evening, a D-1 Greyhounds assistant coach was frantically seeking an explanation of tiebreaker rules after the Greyhounds lost a close battle in the finale of their pool play. The Greyhounds won that tiebreaker, and, with two victories in Sunday’s AAU 17U Boys Basketball National Championship bracket, there’s reason to believe the Greyhounds could repeat as tournament champions, albeit with a completely different cast.

The Boo Williams Summer League 17U team is among those who know just how power-packed the Greyhounds can be. The Greyhounds stunned a favored Boo Williams team Sunday evening, sending the Virginia state champs into the loser’s bracket, where they best finish they can hope for is eighth place.

Boo Williams and their fans, though, certainly got their money’s worth from a game that nearly appeared to be over when the Greyhounds built a 58-48 lead with 3:30 to play in the final period. Ed Davis, though, wasn’t quite ready to surrender. Davis, who has given a verbal agreement to the University of North Carolina, scored two of his team-high 18 points at the foul line to pull Boo Williams to within a single point with 14.1 seconds to play. Two missed free throws by the Greyhounds opened the door, but Boo Williams missed on a buzzer-beating tip-in off a missed three-point attempt.

The loss leaves two Virginia teams in the tournament. The Suffolk Blazers defeated the Connecticut Basketball Club 84-80 to earn a shot at the D-1 Greyhounds in a game to be played Monday at 2:30 p.m. Also reaching the final 32 was GESUS Ball, which defeated the Florida Gold Coast 16U team 71-59. GESUS is now 4-0 in the tournament and faces Full Package Monday at 10 a.m.
