Boo Coasts On Day 1 at AAU Nationals

July 28th, 2007 Posted in AAU Basketball

The Boo Williams AAU basketball bunch is doing it again. One year after losing its first game in the AAU’s 17U National Basketball Championship game, Virginia’s own Boo Williams Summer League team put on a shooting clinic to win both of its Friday pool play games at The Milkhouse at Wide World of Sports (full coverage with videos and photos here).

Boo Williams won its early game 62-44 against the Cincinnati Royals-Black and then finished the day with a convincing 80-42 nightcap against the Spartanburg Bucks, the No. 2 seed in the four-team Pool C. The victories almost assure Boo Williams of earning a top seed in the bracketed tournament, which begins on Sunday. To seal its fate, Boo Williams simply needs to defeat the Team Albany Bearcats, a squad that already fell by 19 points to the Cincinnati team, in today’s 3 p.m. game.

If Boo Williams does what is expected, its next game will be at 9 p.m. on Sunday against the winner of two teams that finish second in their pools. One of those potential foes is GESUS Ball, another Virginia team. GESUS claimed a 91-77 victory in Friday’s pool play, and the team, which is seeded No. 2 in Pool P, finished its first day with a 77-63 win against Florida’s Team Breakdown.

GESUS, though, could play its way out of a potential matchup with Boo by defeating West Virginia’s MOV Jam today at 7:30 p.m. A victory in that game would push GESUS to a No. 1 seed coming out of its pool.

Boo Williams’ worst nightmare would be a matchup with Ohio’s D1 Greyhounds, the team that claimed the 1006 national championship. First, though, the Greyhounds would need to lose twice today to fall to the No. 2 seed in their pool. Given that they won their first game 103-65, the Greyhounds aren’t likely to do much struggling during today’s pool play competition.

In other first-day action, the Richmond Squires lost 72-71. The Richmond Metro Gold, meanwhile, dropped 69-62 and 66-50 games. The Boo Williams second squad, which is composed of 16U players, also was victorious, asw were the Suffolk Blazers, 66-58 first-day winners.
