From a heartwarming Pledge of Allegiance to an unexpected lighting of the Torch, the Coventry Commonwealth Games got off to a memorable beginning at the Roanoke Civic Center. Fans, Families and the Athletes themselves were all together in one room for the only time, and they were fortunate to witness some quality entertainment. Youth, Middle School and High School Teams all boasted their banners, sports and unity while being introduced to the crowd.
A visit from the infamous Jared of Subway sandwiches (One of the Sponsors) was a memorable surprise. Jared praised all the participants for taking part in the Games and practicing a healthy lifestyle. Rebecca Lobo delivered a fabulous speech, mainly asking the audience to persevere, but also to love what they do. Lobo described her special experiences like being on Air Force 1 with President Clinton, debuting on Sesame Street and making it to the WNBA, was all the result of playing basketball. She also made it clear that sticking to her academics was even more crucial to all her success, including success on the playing field. Lobo, then closed the games with the lighting of the Torch. Lobo, with the Flame in her left hand, ran around the whole stadium, high-fiving the crowd with ther right hand. Fireworks soon followed as the she placed the flame in it’s final stop–the symbolic Torch that represented the beginning of the 2007 Virginia Coventry Commonwealth Games. Great job by Virginia Amateur Sports, led by President Peter Lampman and Marketing Director Diane Williams.
