Tough Go For SC Teams at AAU Nationals

While 77 teams, including 11 that went undefeated in their three-game pool play series, earned spots in the bracketed championship tournament that kicks off today, none of those teams hail from South Carolina.
South Carolina Florence International was the only state team to win a pool play game. The International defeated the Metro Atlanta Gladiators 76-72 Saturday afternoon. The International were on the verge of earning a spot in the bracket before falling 80-76 Saturday evening to the New Mexico Lobos. Ohio’s Shining Star-Callahan won Pool CC. Among their three victories was a 79-55 drumming of the International.
South Carolina’s Grand Strand’s Finest defeated Florida’s Gold Coast 16U team 75-69 on Friday evening, but the Finest lost 90-71 to the Pennsylvania Red Storm on Saturday morning. Oddly, the Gold Coast team that gave the Finest their only victory earned the championship bracket berth on a tie-breaker over the Finest and the Red Storm.
The South Carolina Fire finished fourth in Pool O. The Fire lost all three of their games, which included a Saturday afternoon 52-40 loss to Del Val USA. The Spartanburg Bucks also finished 0-3 in pool play. The Bucks had the misfortune of being in Pool C, which also featured the highly-favored Boo Williams Summer League 17U team led by several players who are being recruited by the nation’s top collegiate basketball powers. The Bucks fell 80-42 to Boo Williams on Friday evening and followed it with a 74-53 Saturday morning loss to the Team Albany Bearcats. Spartanburg had a better showing in Saturday evening’s 50-40 loss to the Cincinnati Royals-Black.
Boo Williams, the Alabama Challenge, New York’s Westchester Hawks Select, the North Carolina Gaters and the Marquis Daniles Showtime Ballers are among the teams with the best chances of earning trips to the national quarterfinals.
