Blazers turn up the heat and scorch Northwood

Hudson touchdown

Blair’s bleachers were filled with red-shirted Blazer fans pumped to cheer their newly re-born winning team to their second victory this season. Across the stadium field, the Northwood fans were clad in black, a color that spoke all too starkly of the game’s ultimate outcome.

Capitalizing on the strength and speed of their running backs, the Blazers seemingly turned every opportunity into points on the scoreboard. The Gladiators advances were aided by numerous penalties against Blair, including at least two 15-yard losses for unsportsmanlike conduct called against the home team. Quarterback Jimmy Hessler struggled to find his mark as a weary defense was exploited by Blair’s big men. Northwood posted a touchdown in the second half when Keith Hudson was able to push through for the score.

A fine pass by Hessler in the final seconds of the game found Lydell Baker in the corner of the end zone giving Northwood the parting dignity of 12 against Blair’s 41.

This Friday the team returns to Kaplan field for its first home game of the 2008 season. Dubbed “Code Red” Friday, the players, fans and coaches are primed for some coliseum-style Gladiator football as they take on the up-county Clarksburg Coyotes. Come out and howl for your home team!
