Blazers turn up the heat and scorch Northwood

Hudson touchdown

Blair’s bleachers were filled with red-shirted Blazer fans pumped to cheer their newly re-born winning team to their second victory this season. Across the stadium field, the Northwood fans were clad in black, a color that spoke all too starkly of the game’s ultimate outcome.

Capitalizing on the strength and speed of their running backs, the Blazers seemingly turned every opportunity into points on the scoreboard. The Gladiators advances were aided by numerous penalties against Blair, including at least two 15-yard losses for unsportsmanlike conduct called against the home team. Quarterback Jimmy Hessler struggled to find his mark as a weary defense was exploited by Blair’s big men. Northwood posted a touchdown in the second half when Keith Hudson was able to push through for the score.

A fine pass by Hessler in the final seconds of the game found Lydell Baker in the corner of the end zone giving Northwood the parting dignity of 12 against Blair’s 41.

This Friday the team returns to Kaplan field for its first home game of the 2008 season. Dubbed “Code Red” Friday, the players, fans and coaches are primed for some coliseum-style Gladiator football as they take on the up-county Clarksburg Coyotes. Come out and howl for your home team!

Blair Blazers vs Northwood Gladiators

A short trip down University Boulevard and a match-up with local rival, Montgomery Blair, is next on the schedule for the Gladiators. Last year Northwood triumphed over Blair in a thrilling game which christened the newly lighted Kaplan field. Blair will no doubt defend their home turf this year with pay-back on their agenda. The Blazers will also be fired up from a decisive 47-14 win over Blake on Friday. The Gladiators hope to take the lessons learned at Rockville and show Blair that last year’s victory was no fluke.

Gongbay leads Rockville over Northwood
Sophomore running back stars in 40-18 opening win
by Jennifer Beekman | Staff Writer

In his first varsity football contest, Rockville sophomore running back Crusoe Gongbay rushed for 180 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries in the Rams’ 40-18 home win over Montgomery 2A/1A foe Northwood in Friday’s season opener.

It was just the start to 2008 the Rams were looking for as they seek their second consecutive playoff appearance; last year’s Class 2A West Region semifinal was their first postseason appearance in a decade.

“This was my first big game and I was a little nervous, but once I got in there and the offensive line was blocking well, I just forgot about it,” Gongbay said. “It was really important for us to get off to a good start. The O-line started shutting [Northwood] down. As a sophomore coming in I want to make sure I do a good job and help get the team back to playoffs.”

The Rams overcame a sluggish start Friday. After Gongbay’s 65-yard opening kickoff return set up senior fullback Matthew Yin’s 12-yard touchdown on the first offensive play of the night, Northwood scored twice to take a 12-8 lead.

Gladiator junior left-handed quarterback Jimmy Hessler connected on 28- and 44-yard touchdown passes to Keith Hudson and Timbuk Atakora. Hessler completed 14 of 23 pass attempts for 241 yards and three touchdowns in the game.

“The score really wasn’t indicative of how we played,” Northwood coach Dennis Harris said. “We moved the ball well. We had a couple of bad breaks and we missed too many tackles. But I’m pleased with how the kids did. They’re tough kids and they showed a lot of heart.”

But Rockville’s more balanced attack prevailed. The Rams picked up more than 200 yards on the ground and more than 100 yards in the air; senior quarterback Peter Nalle was 9 for 17 with 108 yards and a touchdown.

Senior Robbie Parker’s 5-yard touchdown run on the Rams’ first possession of the second quarter gave Rockville the lead back, and Gongbay scored with two minutes remaining in the first half to give the Rams a 20-12 lead headed into the locker room. They never trailed again.

Gongbay scored on a 16-yard run on the Rams’ first possession of the second half to increase the team’s lead to 26-12. Northwood answered with Hessler’s 74-yard touchdown pass to Hudson.

But Gongbay’s 65-yard touchdown run late in the third and Nalle’s 19-yard pass to junior Philip McTighe in the end zone sealed Rockville’s first win of 2008.

NORTHWOOD IS YOUNG BUT HUNGRY FOR PLAYOFFS
By Ryan Mink

Northwood’s T-shirts say it all.

“Unfinished Business”

At 5-5 last year, Northwood fell one game short of making the playoffs in just the program’s second year as the team’s loss to Rockville sealed the team’s fate.

Now the program is looking not only to pick up where it left off, but take that next step to reach the 2A/1A playoffs.

“That really killed us,” senior running back Lydell Baker said. “We were so, so close. … That really ignited us and it makes us play to the next level, it makes us want to get the playoffs more. And every single day we come out here and work five times harder than other teams to make sure we get there this year.”

The glaring force working against Northwood is that Baker is the only full-time offensive starter returning and the team only has one defensive starter back. The team had 28 seniors last year and only 12 players return to the team overall, meaning there’s a lot of new faces at Northwood.

“A lot of people think that because we lost a lot of seniors that we won’t do as good,” Baker said. “But we have just as many athletes and those athletes have a whole lot more potential. And the hard work we’re putting in is going to bring the potential out of them.”

“It’s hard work but we come out here and put in the hard work so it’s like we didn’t lose those seniors,” added junior wide receiver Keith Hudson.

Baker will lead the team offensively and defensively at linebacker. He’s a 5-foot-11, 210 wrecking ball that yelled at his teammates to get fired up throughout the team’s scrimmage against Flowers last Friday.

“I’m looking to carry this team,” Baker said. “I’m going to get it done.”

Quarterback Jimmy Hessler threw for 1,400 yards in six games before injuring his toe last season. He returns with more experience and a bevy of talented wide receivers to throw to this year.

“I’ve got a depth of 11 receivers,” Hessler said. “I think we’re in good shape and like I said I think we’ll do better this year than last year.”

The team is so optimistic because of those young receivers and the presence of Hessler and Baker, two key cogs from last year. The team also feels that there are many talented players moving up from the junior varsity.

“I think we just have to be special on offense,” Coach Dennis Harris said. “We don’t have a big offensive line but we have some guys in the right places that can get some stuff done offensively. We’re a little slim in numbers but they do work hard.”

Hessler, who also stars for the school’s baseball team, has his theory about how the season will go.

“Well the first varsity year we went 0-10. Then we went 5-5 last year. If we keep the trend going we can be 10-0,” Hessler said with a smile. “Well, we’ve got some tough teams. I’m thinking maybe 7-3.”

JUMPSTART: Northwood gets its chance to exact revenge in the first game of the season on Sept. 5 as the Gladiators will face 2A foe Rockville, who denied them from the playoffs last year. From there, Northwood faces winless Blair and then another playoff qualifier in Clarksburg in Week 3.

“We have to be strong in those first three,” Harris said.

….
With summer memories fading, the Northwood players and fans are preparing for opening day of the 2008 season. This Friday, September 5 has been dubbed “Code Red.” The fans are being asked to wear red, to come early, and to bring that special Northwood spirit to the field at Rockville. Game begins at 6:30 p.m. We are Northwood.

Let the games begin….Silver Spring Style

Try outs for the 2008 Northwood High School Football Teams (varsity and JV) were held this Saturday, August 16th on the Northwood Practice Field beginning at 8:30 a.m. The Kaplan stadium field is under-going a much needed upgrade with the installation of new sod and an irrigation system to keep it healthy. Unfortunately the field work will delay any “home” games for at least the first three games. We urge our Gladiator fans to travel up to Rockville for the first varsity game on Friday, November 5th at 6:30 p.m and the JV game the next morning at 10:00 a.m. at Rockville. The September 12th game is just down the road on the turf of our local rival, Blair.
We’re looking forward to having some guest bloggers reporting on what we hope will be a season to remember.
