MLB deadline deals: Jason Bay to Rays?

July 31st, 2008 Posted in MLB

The latest rumors have the Tampa Bay Rays acquiring Jason Bay from the Pirates for two prospects, Reid Brignac and Jeff Niemann.

If so, this is a great deal for the Rays, already in first place, and now getting a legit slugger without giving up an elite prospect. Brignac is highly rated but probably not a top 20 type prospect, and the Rays farm system is deep.

The Pirates meanwhile continue to seem to undersell. Bay is not a free agent after this year and does not have a huge contract. It is tough because the Pirates desperately need to restock a depleted organization with as many players as they can get. But, for a star outfielder (Bay), a good lefty RP (Marte) and a decent outfielder (Nady), the Pirates should have come out with more.
