MLB deadline deals: Pudge to Yankees
July 30th, 2008 Posted in MLBTrade: Detroit Tigers get relief pitcher Kyle Farnsworth; New York Yankees get catcher Ivan Rodriguez.
Ivan Rodriguez still seems like a big name, but has been a slightly better than average MLB catcher for the past couple seasons. Still, the Yankees upgrade a bit at an important position and don’t lose much in the process. Kyle Farnsworth meanwhile will do better outside the big city lights and inside the more right-handed pitcher friendly confines of Comerica Park, and the Tigers needed bullpen help. Pudge and Farnsworth are both free agents after this season.
The Yankees have now secured a few important pieces for the stretch run at not much expense, as Pudge now joins Damaso Marte and Xavier Nady on the Yanks July acquisition list.
It is an interesting deal as the best chance for both the Tigers and Yankees will be the wild card, so this is similar to an intra-division deal between two contenders.
