Fresno State wins College World Series

June 26th, 2008 Posted in NCAA baseball

Fresno State won the College World Series (CWS) last night, beating Georgia in the deciding third game, 6-1, culminating a run that was nothing short of one of the greatest cinderella stories ever.

The CWS is very similar to March Madness - 64 teams vying to become national champions. Unfortunately though the CWS doesn’t get nearly the attention of March Madness, although anyone that has been to Omaha ranks it amongst their favorite sporting events. If it did, the nation would be going nuts this morning, because Fresno State went in as the bottom seed in their regional, becoming the lowest seed ever to win any kind of NCAA championship.

The Bulldogs only qualified because they won their post-season tournament, and then faced a perilous path to the championship that was loaded with the top ranked teams in the country, including UNC, continuing the ACC CWS drought in a year in which the ACC was loaded.

The Bulldogs survived by inches, winning six elimination games. The Bulldogs had injuries all over the place, including their top pitcher, and many players playing through injuries. Steve Detwiler, the Bulldogs hitting star last night, slammed two home runs while playing with a torn ligament in his thumb.

This was not one or two dominant players carrying a team on their shoulders. Not getting red hot for a few games or pulling off one huge upset. This was a total team effort against all odds, sustained over a month worth of baseball, starting in their conference championships. Awesome.
