The Wachovia Cup award, sponsored by Wachovia Bank, N.A., and the NCHSAA, recognizes the North Carolina high schools that achieve the best overall interscholastic athletic performances within each of NC’s four competitive classifications for high school athletics.
In the NCHSAA 4-A classification, Myers Park’s fourth-place finish in women’s outdoor track made the difference as Myers Park finished with 387.5 points to 372.5 for Chapel Hill. Providence was just back in third place at 370 points, with top spring finishes including second in men’s golf, in the top eight in women’s soccer and tied for third in baseball. Green Hope was fourth in the overall standings and North Mecklenburg was fifth.

Charlotte Catholic remained first in the NCHSAA 3-A classification on the strength of a men’s dual team tennis state championship and a finish in the top eight in women’s soccer for a total of 470 points. Three-time defending Wachovia champ T.C. Roberson had 402.5 points and tied for second with Asheville High School. Roberson had state runner-up finishes in both women’s soccer and women’s outdoor track while Asheville placed third in men’s outdoor track and sixth in women’s outdoor track. Lake Norman and Mooresville, neighboring rivals like Roberson and Asheville, took fourth and fifth, respectively.

Cardinal Gibbons held on to the top spot among NCHSAA 2-A schools with playoff points in four different spring sports, including sweeping both the top spots in men’s golf and men’s dual team tennis. Gibbons had a total of 632.5 points, well ahead of second place Shelby at 355, which took top honors in men’s outdoor track, finished tied for third in women’s soccer and was fourth among 2-A teams in men’s golf. Women’s soccer champion First Flight was third with 347.5 points and baseball champ Orange placed fourth with a total of 317.5. West Henderson rounded out the top five.

In the NCHSAA 1-A classification, Hendersonville tallied playoff points in four spring sports, including a state championship in men’s outdoor track, a runner-up finish in men’s tennis and fourth-place in women’s outdoor track, to score 525 points and pass Bishop McGuinness. McGuinness was second with 467.5, finishing second in women’s track, tying for third in women’s soccer and in the top eight in baseball. Topsail, boosted by a pair of second-place finishes in men’s golf and baseball, was third with a total of 415. The North Carolina School of Science and Math in Durham, state champions in men’s dual team tennis, placed fourth at 362.5, and Polk County was the fifth leading scorer.
