Cherryville Ironmen win NCHSAA 1A state baseball championship
Cherryville’s Bryan DaCanal was a perfect four for four at the plate, and teammate Seth Freeman had three hits to lead Cherryville to an 11-0 victory in the second and deciding game of the NCHSAA state 1-A baseball championship series at UNCG Baseball Stadium on Saturday.
The game two victory gave the Ironmen a sweep of the best of three championship series by a combined score of 13-0. Cherryville won the opening game on Friday night by a 2-0 count, with Nate Thornburg’s two-run double in the fourth driving in the only runs of the game.
Seth Freeman, who was five for seven at the plate in the series, and pitched a complete-game victory Friday night, was named the Most Valuable Player. Seth was also the Southern Piedmont Conference player of the year.
Cherryville jumped on top with three runs in the first inning, keyed by a two-run triple by DaCanal, and then blew it open with four runs in the third, starting with a Freeman two-run single.
The Ironmen pounded out 15 hits in the victory. Thomas Bess pitched five shutout innings for the victory.
Cherryville finished the season 24-7 and won its last 10 in a row en route to its sixth NCHSAA state baseball championship since 1980 and first since 2001. Topsail ended the year 24-8 overall, its seventh consecutive 20-win season, and made its first trip to a state baseball final. Topsail had been on a ten game winning streak of their own before running into Cherryville in the championship series.
