Clark Massey’s two-run double in the eighth inning lifted Rose to a 5-3 extra-inning victory over Ardrey Kell on Friday night in the first game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A baseball championship series at Five County Stadium.
Rose briefly took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth before Ardrey Kell Knights battled back to take a 3-1 lead in their half of the frame, aided by two walks, two errors and a sacrifice fly by Logan Ratledge.
The Rose Rampants then plated a run in the fifth and tied it at 3-3 in the sixth on a two-out Matt Steele RBI single. Steele had two hits on the night. The score stayed knotted at three until Rose broke through in the eighth, winning the game on Massey’s hit. Mark Wilder was the winning pitcher, going the distance and improving his record to 14-0 as he scattered six hits.
Andrew Miller had a big night for Ardrey Kell with three hits in three trips. Taylor Patterson was two for three for the Knights, now 28-5 overall. Southwestern 4-A player of the year Jordan Darnell (9-3) took the loss on the mound.
