Orange erupted for four runs in the final inning to break open a close game and beat East Rutherford 6-1 on Friday night in the opening game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 2-A baseball championship series at UNCG Baseball Stadium.
Ryan Walker went the distance on the mound for Orange, yielding just three hits and striking out nine while walking one. Seth Baldwin was charged with the loss.
Orange took advantage of a couple of Cavalier errors in the opening frame to take a 1-0 advantage and led 2-1 entering the seventh. The four Orange runs in the seventh came courtesy of a Larry McDonald two-run single and then a J.T. Pope two-run double.
Pope, Braden Reitano and Marquis Riley each had two hits for the Panthers, now 26-3 and within a game of their first NCHSAA state baseball crown. Game two in the series is Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. If necessary, game three would be played at 8 p.m. on Saturday night, or at 5 p.m. if a third game is not necessary in the 1-A series also being played at UNCG.
