LEESVILLE ROAD BLANKS ARDREY KELL 3-0 TO WIN NCHSAA WOMEN’S 4-A SOCCER CHAMPIIONSHIP
Leesville Road started strong, scoring two goals in the game’s first 11 minutes, and rolled to a 3-0 victory over Ardrey Kell to win the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s women’s 4-A soccer championship at Paul Derr Stadium at N.C. State.
Junior forward Nitang Jones of Leesville Road, with a goal and an assist, was named the Most Valuable Player of the championship as the Pride won its ninth straight match, finishing 24-2 in winning its first NCHSAA women’s soccer title.
Sophomore Faren Frizelle opened the scoring in the seventh minute for the winners, the first goal scored against Ardrey Kell in six playoff matches this spring. Then just four minutes later freshman Stephanie Bronson found the back of the net on a cross from Nitang Jones to make it 2-0. Jones then scored the third Pride goal in the 65th minute.
The Pride outshot Ardrey Kell just 10-9, but the Knights managed only a single shot on goal in the final 40 minutes. Leesville dominated the time of possession and its defense, which allowed only six goals all season long, was solid.
Ardrey Kell, a school in only its second year of existence, finished the season 19-3-3.
