2008 NCHSAA girls soccer championship pairings set
Four North Carolina women’s state soccer champions will be crowned this weekend in the 23rd annual NCHSAA finals at Paul Derr Stadium on the campus of North Carolina State University.
The 4-A championship will be played Friday night at 7:30 p.m., and then a tripleheader on Saturday will feature the 1-A, 2-A and 3-A title games.
2008 NC 4A high school girls soccer championship
Leesville Road (23-2) ousted nine-time NCHSAA women’s champion Broughton in a taut Eastern final between Raleigh rivals to put the Pride into the championship match against Ardrey Kell (19-2-2). Freshman Stephanie Bronson of Leesville scored the only goal in the Pride’s regional win, and Kim Kern and Sydney Riggsbee of Leesville Road were all-state recipients last year. Ardrey Kell has shut out all five of its playoff opponents and did not allow a goal in the first 10 games of the season. The Ardrey Kell Knights are led by Southwestern Conference Player of the Year Joy Pittman.
2008 NC 2A high school girls soccer championship
Saturday’s action will start with the 10 a.m. game for the 2-A title between First Flight (21-2) and Forbush (22-3). First Flight has a very solid defensive team, allowing just 12 goals all year long. Sophomore Ashley Tallcott and senior Kristina Argiroff provide the First Flight Nighthawks with a strong one-two scoring punch. Jessica Baity of Forbush knocked home the game’s only goal in a 1-0 third-round win over Wilkes Central and then had two goals in a two-minute span to spark the Falcons past Shelby 4-1 in a Wednesday night regional final.
2008 NC 1A high school girls soccer championship
The 1-A championship is set for 1 p.m., as Dixon (15-2-2) will take on Polk County (16-5-2). Both are in the NCHSAA women’s soccer finals for the first time. Dixon got a pair of goals from Alex Moore and two from Jenna Paramore in a 5-4 overtime win over Topsail in the regional final, and the Bulldogs have scored 23 goals in four playoff games. Polk County goalkeeper Jazmine Bridgeman has a 1.38 goals against average and 11 shutouts, and the Lady Wolverines are led in scoring by Brooke Campbell (16 goals) and Anna Trakas (13 goals).
2008 NC 3A high school girls soccer championship
The final game Saturday is set for a 4 p.m. kickoff for the 3-A championship, sending the only unbeaten team in the field, Asheville T.C. Roberson (28-0), against two-time defending champion Jacksonville White Oak (20-1-1). Roberson’s Lady Rams are ranked number one in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll and are making their sixth visit to an NCHSAA women’s soccer championship, seeking their first title. Roberson established a state record this year with 25 shutouts and the Lady Rams are led offensively by Meghan Gilmore, TCR’s all-time leading career scorer with 36 goals this season. White Oak rolled past Western Guilford 8-2 in the regional final, with junior Stephanie Rose scoring a pair of goals and handling out three assists. The Lady Vikings were making their eighth consecutive appearance in a regional final and are 3-1 in previous state championship appearances.
