UNC Tarheels punch second final four ticket

March 29th, 2008 Posted in NCAA basketball

Last year, North Carolina saw their championship aspirations dashed by a scrappy team from the Big East in the elite eight. The UNC Tarheels were in a similar situation tonight in Charlotte facing a very good Louisville Cardinals team. And, like last year, the Tarheels got out to a good lead, double digits throughout much of the first half. And, like last year, UNC’s Big East opponent came back in the second half.

But Tyler Hansbrough and the Heels would not be denied tonight, prevailing 83-73 after Louisville briefly tied UNC in the second half. Hansbrough scored 28 points, and was huge in the second half when the Louisville defense clamped down on Carolina’s slashers and perimeter players, and the Cardinals made their run. Ellington, Green, Lawson and Thompson also scored in double digits, as UNC earned a final four date with the winner of Davidson and Kansas tomorrow. The final four matchup in San Antonio will be full of good storylines regardless - Carolina started the season vs. Cinderella and fellow NC resident Davidson, and of course Roy Williams left Kansas for UNC.
