Concord Spiders girls basketball beat the Beddingfield Bruins 77-62 this evening to win the 2007-2008 NCHSAA 3A women’s basketball championship.
A pair of underclassmen led the Concord offensive attack as sophomore Nyshia Hammonds led Concord with 20 points while freshman teammate Jatzmin Johnson poured in 16. The Concord defensive pressure and transition offense was the key in beating an excellent Beddingfield team.
It was the first trip to the finals for Coach Angela Morton and the Spiders, but they may be at the start of a run, even without graduating superstar T.T. Belcher, as most of their key players including Johnson, Hammonds, and juniors Brittany Gillis and Courtney Currie return to defend their crown. The Concord boys won last year’s 3-A boys basketball championship.
The Bruins fell for only the second time this season, and were making their second championship game appearance in three years, after going undefeated to win the championship two years ago. The Bruins do return star Monique Spry (17 points in championship), but will have to replace Jean Best (21 points in championship) if they are to make another run next season.
