After over 1000 matches over two days, 42 wrestlers remained standing as champions of their weight class in their NCHSAA classification (see full list below).
Cary wrestlers took home five of the individual state titles, leading the Imps to their fourth consecutive 4-A team tournament championship, and fifth in the past six years. Chapel Hill was second and Davie County third. Chris Townsend of South Caldwell, the 135-pound state champion, was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the 4-A championship.
Winston-Salem Parkland wrestlers were dominant in defending their crown, winning five individual championships, and racking up 269.5 total points to win their second consecutive 3-A team championship. No other team had ever passed the 200-point marker. Eden Morehead and High Point Andrews finished second and third, respectively. Marcus Blue of TW Andrews, the state champion at 152 pounds, earned the Most Outstanding Wrestler award for the tournament.
Orange claimed the combined 1-A/2-A team tournament championship, beating out a tough field that included Newton-Conover (second place; the 2-A dual team champions), and defending champion Mount Pleasant (third place). Jonathan Burns of Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons, won the state crown at 145 pounds, was selected the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the classification.
The 2008 wrestling championships were full of great stories including Rosewood’s Olivia Neal, the first female wrestler ever to qualify for the state tournament. Neal won two matches, adding to over 100 career wrestling victories in her high school wrestling career.
