1A/2A day one summary (Lawrence Joel Coliseum, Winston)
Orange emerged from the pack as the first-day leader after Friday’s action in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 1-A/2-A state wrestling tournament championships at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The two teams which met for the NCHSAA dual team title two weeks ago are on top in the tight standings, led by Orange with 51.5 points and Newton-Conover in second with 38. Orange beat Newton-Conover for the dual team championship. Robbinsville is in third with 31.5 points, followed by defending champ Mount Pleasant with 30 and Mayodan Dalton McMichael with 29. One of the highlights on the opening day of action was the performance of Rosewood’s Olivia Neal at 103 points, the first female wrestler ever to qualify for the state tournament. Neal won her first match before losing to Robbinsville’s Erik Messick on a technical fall in the quarterfinals. Go to the NCHSAA site for all the details.

Winston-Salem Parkland rolled up a big lead over the field after Friday’s opening day of action in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A wrestling tournament championships at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Parkland, the defending tournament champ which also won the NCHSAA dual team title earlier this month, racked up 98 team points through the quarterfinals, well ahead of second-place Eden Morehead with 54.5. Hickory St. Stephens is in third with 44.5, followed by Jamestown Ragsdale (38.5) and High Point T.W. Andrews (33.5). Parkland had 13 wrestlers march into the quarterfinals, and nine of them advanced to the semifinal round. Go to the NCHSAA site for all the details.

Three-time defending champion Cary holds a substantial lead in the team standings after Friday’s opening day of action in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association wrestling tournament championships at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Cary tallied 70.5 points through the quarterfinal round, while second-place Matthews David Butler scored 36.5. The Imps, who won the dual team championship earlier this month and has earned four of the last five tournament crowns, placed seven wrestlers in the quarterfinals and had six to advance to semifinal action on Saturday. Durham Riverside is in third place with 32.5 points, followed by Chapel Hill with 31.5 and then a tie for fifth between New Bern and Watauga with 27 apiece. Go to the NCHSAA site for all the details.
