2007 NC NCHSAA high school football championship games
1AA Championship, December 8th, Kenan Stadium (Chapel Hill), 7:30pm
James Kenan 13, West Montgomery 6
Shawn Jones threw for 202 yards and Brandon Satchell scored the winning touchdown to help unbeaten James Kenan top West Montgomery 13-6 in the Class 1-AA North Carolina High School Athletic Association championship on Saturday night.
Kenan had three great opportunities to get the ball in the end zone, but each time the Warriors defense stiffened and Kenan came away with just five points — on a safety early in the second quarter and a 27-yard field goal by Jorge Vasquez less than 3 minutes into the third quarter.
About midway through the third, Kenan’s Mathis Stedman fumbled at his own 29, and on third-and-6, Hurley connected with Drake to make it 6-5.
Hurley’s 50-yard pass to Adam Elkins down to the Kenan 4 midway through the fourth was called back when the quarterback was ruled past the line of scrimmage.
The Warriors appeared in control early in the fourth quarter when, leading by one, Marke Powell intercepted Jones’ pass to give them possession at the Kenan 17-yard line.
But Kenan held West Montgomery to 6 yards on four plays to set up the Tigers’ winning drive.
Satchell quickly reversed field position with a 46-yard run, and three plays later, Jones connected with Kendal Jones down the right sideline to the Warriors’ 3. Satchell, who had 111 yards on 20 carries, scored on the ensuing play.
Kendal Jones finished with four receptions for 102 yards.
Vince Jordan ran for 51 yards and Josh Hurley threw a 25-yard third-quarter touchdown to Dominique Drake to lead West Montgomery (13-3).
The state championship is the first in any sport for Kenan. Last year, the Tigers lost the title game to Thomasville 13-7.
