1A Championship, December 8th, Carter-Finley Stadium (Raleigh), 11am
Plymouth 20, North Duplin 13
Angelo Sharpless caught two first-half touchdown passes to lead Plymouth past North Duplin 20-13 on Saturday to win the Class 1A North Carolina High School Athletic Association championship.
Sharpless also intercepted two passes as the Vikings (16-0) — ranked No. 4 in the final Associated Press 1A poll — held off a second-half rally by the fifth-ranked Rebels to cap an undefeated season with their first state title.
Sharpless pulled in a screen pass from Dasheen Perry — who went 5-for-5 for 131 yards passing — on Plymouth’s first series and raced 23 yards down the sideline for the Vikings’ first score. He then outjumped a North Duplin defender on a 25-yard TD pass on the next possession for a 14-0 lead.
Another long pass set up the Vikings’ third score, when Andre Mitchell pulled down a 43-yard completion. Two plays later, Mitchell ran in a sweep from 9 yards with 6:27 remaining to stake Plymouth to a 20-0 lead at the break.
But North Duplin (14-1) got back in the game with a pair of third-quarter touchdowns. Alan Schilling recovered a blocked punt in the end zone with 8 minutes left for the Rebels’ first score, and another short punt set up a drive capped by Billy Mello’s two-yard run with 2:20 remaining.
However, Plymouth’s defense came up big on the Rebels’ next two possessions. The Vikings forced a three-and-out on the first possession, and Kelly Chesson came up with an interception on the next series.
Akeem Cox ran for 102 yards for North Duplin, which was playing in its third state championship game and the first since 1975.
