New Bern beats Independence to win state football championship

New Bern won the 2007 4-AA high school state football championship, beating 7-time defending champion Independence
by a final score of 28-17.

New Bern quickly found themselves down 14-0 to the 7-time defending state champions, but the Bears showed the resolve that had put them in the championship game, rallying to win the state championship. New Bern steadily chipped away, scoring one touchdown in each quarter, and making big plays throughout the game. Kevin Reddick scored the first two New Bern touchdowns, and then Brett Williams connected with Mike Price for the go-ahead and ultimately game winning touchdown, followed by a Vince McDuffie two-point conversion. The Bears’ Danzel Boomer iced the game with an interception return for a TD, and had a spectacular interception to end the game. Independence stars Rod Chisholm and Lawrence Williams were both limited by ankle injuries, and Independence could not find the endzone in the second half. Independence’s touchdowns came on Anthony Carrothers TD passes to Javon Rembert and Fernando White. New Bern’s win ends Independence’s incredible run of a state record seven consecutive championships (three of them over New Bern).
