2007 NC NCHSAA high school football championship games
2A Championship, December 8th, Carter-Finley Stadium (Raleigh), 3:30pm
Lincolnton 28, South Columbus 14
Lincolnton won 11 straight after a 1-4 start — albeit including losses to state finalists North Gaston (3A) and Shelby (2AA).
Lincolnton never got down against a South Columbus team that allowed an average of 4.4 points per game and no more than 15 this season. C.J. Wilson, Championship MVP, who tallied 111 all-purpose yards (67 rushing), scored two touchdowns in a five-minute span on 3- and 1-yard sweeps right — the latter 10:15 before halftime. Adam Thompson’s 12-yard touchdown pass to Dominique Pugh 10 seconds prior to halftime that proved to be the game winner.
South Columbus was having little success in the first half, managing only 46 yards of total offense and failed to move the chains on five first-half possessions, going 0-for-5 on third-down conversions.
But South Columbus came out with renewed vigor to start the second half, gaining its first first down of the game on the quarter’s first play, an 11-yard pass from quarterback Justin Duncan to Rashawn Grate. The 11-play drive, which Duncan kept alive with a three-yard run on fourth and one at the Wolves 10, culminated in Jacobs’ first TD run from the 1, and the Stallions trailed 21-7.
Momentum swung firmly to the Stallions’ side on the ensuing kickoff, as Lincolnton tried a reverse on the return that ended up in the possession of a South Columbus player at the Wolves 22. The short drive appeared to stall with a fourth down at the Lincolnton 3, but the Stallions called Jacobs’ number again, and he bulled his way into the end zone to cut the lead to 21-14 with 2:41 to play in the third quarter.
The teams traded punts for much of the final period. South Columbus’ final best chance to score fizzled at the Lincolnton 15 when Jacobs got two yards on a fourth-and-three run with 5:35 to play in the game.
The Stallions got the ball back with 3:31 to play, but Duncan’s pass into the flat was picked off by Lincolnton’s Jimmy Angle, who took it 48 yards to end zone to account for the final score, setting off a wild celebration among the Wolves and their fans.
