4AA NCHSAA East Regional Final, November 30th
(7) Leesville Road vs (4) New Bern
4AA NCHSAA West Regional Final, November 30th
(10) Charlotte Independence vs (1) West Charlotte
New Bern (12-2) has been to the state final three of the past five seasons, and Wake County teams, except for Garner, haven’t fared as well in the playoffs.
West Charlotte’s loss was to Independence (49-32) on Sept. 7. The Lions have since won 10 straight behind Darius Thomas (56 touchdown passes), a deep core of receivers led by Bobby Grier and an aggressive defense. Independence, which has won a record seven consecutive N.C. championships, has topped 400 yards in all three playoff games. Independence running back Rod Chisholm has 2,432 yards and 42 touchdowns and has caught three scoring passes. Jayme Watson (123 tackles), Jarvis Pierce (18 sacks) and Lawrence Williams (73 tackles) anchor the defensive front.

(2) Southern Durham vs (1) John T. Hoggard
4A NCHSAA West Regional Final, November 30th
(2) Winston-Salem Mt. Tabor vs (1) Watauga County
Southern Durham quarterback Alan Lea, has passed for 1,823 yards, including 785 to Jamario Clayton. Leading rusher Lamont Pettiford (874 yards and 14 touchdowns) is injured and is not expected to play. But Jones said running back is the club’s deepest position. Hoggard’s Shawn Sidbury rushed 29 times for 232 yards and scored on runs of 69, 3, 7 and 60 yards in the win over Hillside.
Mt. Tabor defensive back/receiver Ed Gainey (a Shrine Bowl pick) and receiver Brandon Miller were suspended from school and will sit out for disciplinary reasons. Watauga’s Eric Breitenstein has rushed for 2,297 yards and 28 touchdowns, made 170 tackles and forced six fumbles. The Pioneers have won six straight games and are averaging 39.6 points in the playoffs. Adam Chiarolanzio (694 rushing yards) and Blake Beason have alternated effectively at quarterback and combined to throw 12 scoring passes.

3AA NCHSAA East Regional Final, November 30th
(1) Oxford Webb vs (7) Greensboro Dudley
3AA NCHSAA West Regional Final, November 30th
(6) T.C. Roberson vs (5) Charlotte Catholic
Webb’s offense is more of a control spread offense than Western Alamance’s, featuring more inside runs and counter plays and fewer throws to the perimeter. RB Rockie Lewis has rushed for 1,411 yards and 14 TD’s, while dual-threat QB Antwan Thorpe has 1,316 yards and 19 TD’s on the ground with 1,590 yards and 15 TD’s through the air. The Panthers, matching speed against size up front, will attack defensively and see how Webb responds. Offensively, if Dudley can get its running game established and control the clock, the Panthers will have a good shot of reaching the 3-AA state final for the third time in six years.
Charlotte Catholic scored on its first six possessions last week and has weapons in Christian Culicerto (19 touchdown passes), three backs with 700 or more rushing yards and Wes Stringfield (33 catches, seven touchdowns). Linebacker Jeff Levasseur has 124 tackles and seven sacks, both team-highs. Roberson quarterback Tripp Weaver threw for a career-high four touchdowns and 162 yards in a victory against Belmont South Point last week. Roberson forced five turnovers and has six shutouts.

3A NCHSAA East Regional Final, November 30th
(1) Western Alamance vs (3) Rocky Mount
3A NCHSAA West Regional Final, November 30th
(4) Asheville vs North Gaston
On Friday night, Western Alamance (14-0) entertains Rocky Mount (14-0) in the Class 3-AA regional final. The past two years, Rocky Mount’s season has ended in heartbreak at the hands of Western Alamance. The Gryphons are the best defense the Warriors’ high-octane offense has encountered since Dudley late in the regular season. Cornerback Jacobi Jenkins is an East Carolina commitment. MLB Emmanuel Davis has 168 tackles, while OLB Chris Pittman and DE Nick Harrison are excellent pass rushers. Western Alamance coach Hal Capps has injury concerns with WR Kenneth Lindsay (ankle) and RB Billy Williamson (knee). His defense faces a tricky wing-T attack featuring five runners at 450-plus yards. Marquavis Alston leads the way with 1,336 yards and 21 TD’s.
The sixth-seed, North Gaston (11-2) travel to face Asheville Friday at 7:30, with a trip to Chapel Hill for the state championship game on the line. North Gaston quarterback is A.J. Blue, has rushed for 1,954 yards and 20 TDs while adding 1,406 yards and 15 TDs through the air. Running back Princeton Brooks is a nice complement in the backfield. He’s rushed for 2,120 yards and 34 TDs. Asheville’s Rahkeem Morgan ran for 113 yards and two touchdowns last week, and Greg Ray rushed for 96 yards in a 43-20 win against top seed Winston-Salem Carver. Asheville is in the semifinals for the fifth time in six years.

2AA NCHSAA East Regional Final, November 30th
(2) Southern Vance vs (1) Reidsville
2AA NCHSAA West Regional Final, November 30th
(2) Mt. Pleasant vs (1) Shelby
Last week, Reidsville essentially could focus its defensive efforts on powerful RB Bernard Williams of St. Pauls. The Rams did that by putting a fifth player on the defensive line and blew the game open early with the state’s top-scoring offense (49.5 points a game). Southern Vance isn’t as big on the offensive line but has more weapons than St. Pauls. QB Jamere Pugh, who the Rams saw in the third round of the playoffs in 2004, has passed for 2,465 yards and 24 TD’s as a senior and has rushed for 837 yards and 8 scores. Among the other top threats: RB Jeremy Davis (1,225 yards, 14 TD), RB O’Darren Gill (1,053, 14) and WR D.J. Person (881 receiving yards, 10 TD).
Shelby, the two-time defending state champion, has played excellent defense all season. Lanston Tanyi has 103 tackles, and Corey Brooks has 19 sacks among his 104 tackles. The Golden Lions also have blocked five punts. Larry Raper and Donovan Gidney have 10 rushing touchdown apiece. Mount Pleasant has shut out six opponents and has several offensive threats — Jose Sanchez (1,701 rushing yards), Haywood Forte (1,172 rushing yards, 19 touchdowns), Tye Hill (1,055 passing yards) and Jason Talbert (15 scoring catches).

2A NCHSAA East Regional Final, November 30th
(2) Jacksonville Northside vs (1) South Columbus
2A NCHSAA West Regional Final, November 30th
(10) East Lincoln vs (5) Lincolnton
Both clubs enter 14-0 as the East Central 2-A Conference champion Monarchs are the East bracket’s No. 2 seed while the Waccamaw 1-A/2-A Conference champion Stallions are the top seed by virtue of a tiebreaker. Ironically, both the Stallions previous two appearances in the regional final - in 1996 and 2002 - have resulted in defeats to Clinton. While South Columbus has the luxury of playing in front of their home crowd, another factor be the fact Northside has toppled the Stallions in each of the last two playoffs. The Monarchs rallied for a 14-13 first-round victory last season and beat South Columbus 10-0 two years ago in the third round.
One of the biggest games in Lincoln Co. football history two teams meet for the chance to go to the state finals when Licolnton hosts East Lincoln. East Lincoln (10-4) has won seven in a row since then and has shown tremendous improvement as sophomore quarterback Josh Wilson has matured. Wilson is passing for 106.4 yards per game and rushing for 64.9. Forney, the school’s all-time leading rusher, has run for 1,540 yards and 23 TDs. Lincolnton (10-4) boasts an even-more impressive nine-game winning streak, starting with the Southern Piedmont Conference opener against South Iredell. Prior to that game, the Wolves had started 1-4 against a brutal non-conference schedule that included two teams that are still alive in their respective playoff brackets, North Gaston and Shelby.

1AA NCHSAA East Regional Final, November 30th
(1) James Kenan vs (4) Pender
1AA NCHSAA West Regional Final, November 30th
(6) West Montgomery vs (4) Albemarle
Pender and James Kenan have no secrets. They probably know each other’s playbooks as well as they do their own. The fourth-seeded Patriots hope the third meeting in nearly a calendar year is the charm when they visit the Tigers tonight in the 1AA Eastern final. They met in third round of the football playoffs last year, and James Kenan won 7-0. Earlier this season, Pender proved no match after do-everything quarterback Anthony Blanks suffered a first-half back injury in a 31-6 loss. While Pender (10-4) has set a school record for victories in a season, unbeaten James Kenan (14-0) has dropped only one game in two years, to Thomasville in the state finals.
West Montgomery won 41-10 in the regular-season meeting on Aug. 31. Albemarle, on a four-game winning streak, relies on Jamar Corpening (1,000-yard rusher), fullback A.J. Little and Brian Polk (two touchdown passes last week). West Montgomery’s Vince Jordan and Dominique Drake had two rushing touchdowns apiece last week.
