    4A Preview and Notes

  • Southern Durham takes on Chapel Hill for a chance to advance to the regional finals. These two teams met on Oct. 12 with Southern Durham pulling out the victory 15-14. Southern Durham defeated Fuqauy Varinia last week through the air as Alan Lea passed for 199 yards with 3 TDs connecting with J. Clayton for 81 receiving yards and a TD, while also hooking up with N. Jones and Reese Wiggins for TD passes. Chapel Hill won a defensive battle against Smithfield-Selma 13-7 in the rematch of a game from earlier in the year. Chapel Hill got touchdowns from a Justin Haus’ touchdown pass to Justin Kenyon and a C.J. Washington touchdown run.
  • Hillside defeated the defending state champs J.H. Rose and advanced to play undefeated John T. Hoggard. Hillside put up 42 points but gave up 30. Hillside’s offense was clicking on all cylinders as Corey Gattis completed 12 of 20 passes for 254 yards with 3 TDs and ran 9 times for 104 yards. Geo Irvine caught 6 passes for 141 yards with 2 TDs, while Ronnie Williams caught 5 passes for 112 yards with a TD. Gary Douglas ran 24 times for 142 yards with a TD, while Desmond Scott ran for another score. Quinton Scottin returned an interception for a score. Hoggard’s offense was equally as impressive putting up 52 with Shawn Sidbury rushing 13 times for 164 yards and 4 TDs. Mark Crecco completed 6 of 10 passes for 88 yards with a TD and ran for a score. Luke Caldwell caught 3 passes for 94 yards with a TD and ran for a score.
  • Mount Tabor hosts a red hot Ashbrook team in this third round game. Mount Tabor is coming off a victory over Crest, where they had a very balaced offensive attack. Hunter Furr ran for 207 yards with a TD, while Donny McElveen completed 15 of 18 passes for 267 yards with 2 TDs and ran for 2 TDs. Lemar Wilson caught 5 passes for 96 yards and a TD, while Brooks Hardin caught 5 passes for 96 yards, and Brandon Miller caught a TD pass. Ed Gainey ran for a TD and had an interception. Ashbrook defeated Ardrey Kell as they were led by Ryan Gordon, who had a rushing touchdown and two receiving touchdowns from quarterback Gabe Beverly, who threw 3 touchdown passes on the night.
  • Watauga hosts Purnell Sweet for the right to move on to the next round of the playoffs. Watauga running back Eric Breitenstein scored six touchdowns on 316 yards, both of which were career highs, to lead his team to a 52-36 victory against Central Cabarrus on Friday. Purnell Sweet advanced to the third round of the state 4-A playoffs Friday night by edging No. 5 seed Asheville Reynolds 22-21 behind Marlin Locklear’s 206 yards rushing and a defense that allowed just 23 yards after halftime.
  • The State Championship game is set for December 8, 2007 at Groves Stadium in Winston Salem at 3:00 pm.
