  • Lake Norman soccer won the 2007 NCHSAA 3A soccer championship tonight at Bulls Stadium at the WRAL soccer complex in Raleigh, beating Fike 4-2 in overtime, after trailing late in the second half 2-0.

The Lake Norman soccer and Fike soccer web sites linked above will have photo and video highlights added throughout the weekend. Matt Beeman may post a detailed game summary, and here is the capsule from the NCHSAA:

Senior forward Matt Foxx scored a hat trick on Friday night to lead Lake Norman to a thrilling 4-2 overtime triumph over Wilson Fike in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A men’s soccer championship at the Durham Bulls Soccer Stadium at the WRAL Soccer Center.

Foxx, who scored his three goals in a 12-minute stretch in regulation and the first overtime, was named the Most Valuable Player of the championship. Lake Norman finished the season with a perfect 29-0 mark in winning its second consecutive NCHSAA state 2-A championship and its 56th consecutive game.

Wilson Fike was seemingly in command with a 2-0 advantage and less than 10 minutes to play, as the Golden Demons scored the first goals against Lake Norman to be tallied in postseason play this year. Austin King scored both goals for the Golden Demons.

But then Foxx connected twice in 85 seconds, firing the game-tying tally from the right side of the box to just inside the left post at the 72:10 mark. Then a Foxx header less than three minutes into the first overtime proved to be the game winner. Foxx, the North Piedmont Conference Player of the Year, ended the season with 35 goals. J.Q. Brantley scored Lake Norman’s final goal.

Fike, which set a school record for victories and shutouts in a single season, wound up 21-5-1.
