    1AA Preview and Notes

  • Wallace-Rose Hill, the six seed, against East Bladen, the three seed, is the best first round match up in the east. Wallace-Rose Hill comes in having lost three games on the year to three playoff teams and will be without starting safety Matthew Partin, who suffered a season-ending neck injury in a playoff victory over Midway last week. East Bladen run two different wishbone sets and sometimes lines up in a shotgun.
  • Jordan Matthews, the ten seed, against Thomasville, the two seed, is the best second round match up in the west. These two teams met in the regular season with Thomasville winning by a score of 29-22. Jordan Matthews is looking to upset the defending state champs.
  • James Kenan takes on North Johnston in the second round and it should be interesting as James Kenan hired coach Ken Avent from the Panthers two years ago, and now he faces his old team in a second round 1-AA game. James Kenan is led by Brandon Satchell with 1,475 yards rushing and 18 touchdowns and quarterback Shawn Jones’ 1,016 passing yards and 12 touchdowns, while Josh Hicks has 151 tackles and Derrick Barden has 128. North Johnston is led by running back E.J. Knight, who has rushed for over 1300 yards and 19 touchdowns.
  • Ayden-Grifton takes on Pender. Ayden-Grifton rolled to an easy 48-0 win over East Columbus at home in last week’s first round matchup. Tonight, they’ll face a Pender squad that finished in third place overall (first among 1A teams) in the Waccamaw 2A/1A. Pender pounded East Columbus on Oct. 19, 34-0. Both A-G and Pender lost to Kenan, as Ayden-Grifton was defeated 36-0 on Aug. 24 and Pender lost 31-7 on Sept. 7.
  • The State Championship game is set for December 8, 2007 at Kenan Stadium, in Chapel Hill at 7:30 pm.
