    1A Preview and Notes

  • Northampton-East, the five seed, against Jones Sr., the four seed, is the best second round match up in the east. The hottest 1A team in North Caro-lina not named Thomasville or Kenan hosts a Northampton-East squad that has won five of its past six games. Jones Sr. winners of eight consecutive games, rolled past Southeast Halifax, 37-8, last week. Northampton-East runs the triple option well and they beat Mattamuskeet, 39-14, to advance to the second round.
  • Robbinsville, the six seed, against Lakewood, the three seed, is the best second round match up in the west. Robbinsville is one of only two WNC teams with a pair of 1,000 yard rushers. And yet, sophomores Kurt Odom (1,433 yards, 13 touchdowns) and Blake Anderson (1,418 yards, 16 touchdowns) were upstaged by yet another 10th grader, Randy Hernandez, a week ago when he burned Alleghany for a season-high 122 yards. Lakewood drew a No. 3 seed despite finishing fourth in the Super Six Conference, and the Leopards have gone 5-1 at home this season. Since Robbinsville didn’t attempt a single pass a week ago, the Black Knights won’t need to concern themselves with Lakewood star Larry Edwards’ average of two sacks a game.
  • South Stanly takes on Cherokee. Even before last week’s rout of Andrews, Cherokee was already looking forward to a second-round game with Elkin, which eliminated Cherokee from the playoffs two of the last three years. No luck. South Stanly junior wideout Terry Shankle accounted for 95 receiving yards and two second-half touchdowns for South Stanly, which upset Elkin. The Rebel Bulls can also move the ball on the ground with the rushing of Dee Jackson and James Watkins. Can they keep Cherokee’s two-headed rushing monster of senior Langston Wood (1,707 yards, 26 touchdowns) and junior Carr Crowe (1,059 yards, 12 touchdowns) from controlling the game?
  • Union takes on a tough task in undefeated North Duplin. Union’s T.J. Williams rushed for 100 yards while Travis Williams added 89 yards and a TD in an overtime win against Hobbton. North Duplin’s Akeem Cox rushed for 198 yards and two scores last week. Doug Lloyd passed for 148 yards and three TDs.
  • Perquimans, the No. 11 seed in the 1A east region, will host No. 14 Northampton-West in the second round of the state football playoffs tonight at 7:30 p.m. Perquimans faces a team that finished fourth in the Tar Roanoke, three games behind conference champion Louisburg. Northampton-West (5-6) handled Tideland champion Jamesville, 38-8, in the first round. They are a run-heavy team under first-year had coach Gary Warren. Northampton-West had three 100-yard rushers and 408 yards on the ground in last week’s win. Perquimans has many weapons of its own, led by junior quarterback Forrest Monty, who had 158 total yards and had a hand in three touchdowns in the Pirates’ 59-12 win over Creswell in the first round. Jamel Warren is a work-horse at fullback and state 200-meter champion Lamar Whidbee is a multiple threat running, receiving and in the return game. The lone common opponent of the two is Gates. Perquimans won at Gates, 21-6, on Sept. 14. Gates turned around three weeks later and defended their home field against the Hurricanes. The 29-22 victory was Gates’ only win of the season.
  • The State Championship game is set for December 8, 2007 at Carter-Finley Stadium, in Raleigh at 11 am.
