High school football: Panthers make swamp bait out of Spring Creek
October 29th, 2007 Posted in High School FootballBy Greg Baker:
Tonight was Senior night down in Kenly, NC. The Panthers of North Johnston took on Wayne Counties Spring Creek Gators. To put it mildly the Gators came up on dry land and were literally torn limb for limb by a bunch of big crazed cats.
It was ugly folks. For the first time this year it was actually cold outside or at least enough so to make this fat reporter cringe every time a cold football bounced off the hands of a Spring Creek receiver. Yet, there were at least a couple of guys in the red jerseys who I don’t believe had their temperature drop below boiling all evening. Yes, there was indeed another #25 EJ Knight sighting tonight. Knight’s numbers for the game were 6 carries for 159 yards and three touchdowns. He was yanked midway through the second quarter and replaced by #36 Glenwood Watson. Now one might think that Mr. Watson would not be quite as effective as his predecessor but you would be mistaken. There was no rest for the Gators this night. By the time the game was over, Watson would leave the game with 100 yards rushing and three touchdowns of his own, and Knight would see spot duty here and there just for good measure.
I know what you’re thinkin’, Watson and Knight were the entire game for NJ. Nope, not the case at all. Quarterback #14 Cliff Holloman would throw an eleven yard TD strike to #15 Daniel Renfrow, and Fullback #6 Charles Pipkin would rush one over the goal line late in the game for the final score of the slaughter. The class of 2008 seniors ended their last home game in grand style, standing on the sideline cutting up and relaxing while their understudies finished off a truly worn out group from Spring Creek. Final score of the evening would be Panthers 60 and the Gators 10.
Next week will be the final regular season game of the season as North Johnston travels down to Ayden Griffon. It appears that this game will decide who finishes second in the conference and there might even be a home field playoff game at stake. It should be a whale of a fight.
Special Recognition to a Senior of note: #50 Spencer Hardison. The reason I wrote this column this season was to spend some time on the sideline with you and your dad during your senior year. Press Pass equals Sideline…its simple math really. I’ve watched you grow from a wide open little boy into a rugged young man, and I have truly enjoyed this season with you and Chuck. See, I told you I wouldn’t miss a game this year…
