South Mecklenburg football won their Southwestern 4A conference opener, and their fourth consecutive football game overall, beating East Mecklenburg football 10-7 tonight.

Preston Couch kicked a game winning 38-yard field goal with time running out to cap a South Mecklenburg fourth quarter comeback victory in a defensive war. South Mecklenburg tied the game on a Jey Yokeley to Dante Williams touchdown pass with about two minutes remaining. South Meck then picked off a pass in East Meck territory to give the Sabres the ball back, and the Sabres took advantage moving the ball about ten yards before the Couch game winner.

The defenses dominated most of the game and it looked like East Meck’s strong defense would make the Eagles early James Harvin to Nick Bratton touchdown pass stand up. And the East Meck defense did exactly that until the late Yokeley to Williams TD pass.

South Mecklenburg improves to 4-1 overall on the season while East Mecklenburg drops to 3-2.
