The Charlotte Catholic Cougar football team was not going to be denied on Friday night. Facing a very strong North Gaston football team on a lightning filled Friday night that postponed most North Carolina high school football games, Charlotte Catholic rallied to beat North Gaston 26-24.

Charlotte Catholic QB Christian Culicerto led the Cougars on two fourth quarter touchdown drives, completing several critical long passes. Ryan Sweeney scored the first Charlotte Catholic fourth quarter touchdown, and Culicerto rushed for the second to give Charlotte Catholic the 26-24 lead. North Gaston’s electrifying QB A.J. Blue gave the Wildcats a chance at a last minute victory, as he broke off a huge 65-yard run to advance North Gaston to the Charlotte Catholic red zone with about a minute to play. North Gaston managed to get inside the 10, but the Cougars defense held, and North Gaston’s potential game winning field goal attempt went wide right. Blue rushed for over 200 yards and two touchdowns in the losing effort.

Charlotte Catholic improves to 3-2 and North Gaston falls to 3-1.
