Davie County went into halftime up 10-7 on a late field goal, and could have been up more. West Rowan came out of the locker room strong and turned the backyard braul into an absolute thriller.

The West Rowan offense featuring the running of K.P. Parks (over 250 scintillating yards) dashes with fullback Day’s hammer runs up the gut, and quick Brantley Horton to Jonathan Hill slants, really started to click in the third. “We made some halftime adjustments, going to more of a zone blocking scheme up front” said West Rowan Coach Scott Young. On the first possession of the third quarter, Parks followed a long Avery kickoff return with a 51-yard touchdown run (video highlight above), giving West the 13-10 (PAT blocked) third quarter lead. Both teams ran the ball well between the twenties for the remainder of the quarter, but both defenses came up with big plays when they needed to, and the score stayed at 13-10 until the fourth.

We’ll be lucky to see another quarter this season as good as tonight’s fourth quarter between West and Davie. Davie started it off by reclaiming the lead at 17-13 with eight minutes to go on quarterback Garrett Benje’s TD scamper. West came roaring right back as K.P. Parks rushed for a TD and then cashed in a two-point conversion as well (after a Davie penalty) to give West the 21-17 lead with about five minutes left in the game. Davie was far from done.

Davie’s star running back James Mayfield (over 150 yards rushing) punished the West Rowan defense on several runs, ultimately scoring a TD to give Davie the 24-21 lead with 3:31 left in the game. It was the type of late, momentum-changing TD drive that most teams on the wrong end don’t recover from.

West took the hit to the gut, but didn’t flinch. Parks took the kickoff back to the West 46, and then yet another long Parks run followed by a key Brantley Horton to Jonathan Hill completion (video highlight coming Saturday) got West Rowan into the red zone with 1:30 left to play. Time for a few safe runs up the middle to try to setup a game tying field goal? No way. West stayed aggressive, featuring Parks looking for the corner and steadily moved the ball inside the 10. With the clock winding down inside of 10 seconds, and West out of timeouts, Parks calmly took a fourth down handoff, made a quick cut, and dove into the end zone for the game winning score with 2.8 seconds left on the clock.
