Update: Cherryville Legion blanked Gaffney, South Carolina Legion 2-0 on Sunday behind the pitching of Cory Parks and Chris Henderson. Steven Hoyle continued his torrid hitting in Georgia with two more hits and an RBI. Hoyle is hitting well over .400 during the Southeast Regionals. Cherryville, Coumbia (Tennessee), and Bayanon (Puerto Rico) are the three Legion baseball teams that are still battling it out to determine the 2007 Southeast Regional Champion and earn a berth in the 2007 American Legion World Series. Richard Walker has a good summary here in the Shelby Star.
Cherryville Legion beat Gainesville Georgia’s Legion team 9-5 on Saturday to stay alive at the Southeast American Legion Baseball Regionals in Albany, Georgia. Steven Hoyle was huge at the plate and on the mound. Hoyle took the ball in relief and shut down the Gainesville offense, allowing only one run over the game’s final 6 innings. At the plate, Hoyle had four hits, two RBI, and scored two runs.
Cherryville beat another Georgia team - host Albany - in their opening game, were shutout by the legion team from Columbia, Tennessee on a John Beasley five-hitter in their second game, before beating Gainesville on Saturday. Cherryville is the North Carolina champion, beating Wayne County Legion last week at the NC Legion Championships in Garner, NC to advance to the Southeastern Regionals.
