The Kappa Magic 17s lost a blowout game to a team composed of 16U players at the AAU Junior Division national basketball championship tournament Saturday afternoon, but Magic Coach Lacardo Means said his team isn’t sweating the small stuff. After all, said Means, his team won its first two games and is guaranteed a spot in the bracketed national championship tournament that kicks off in earnest Sunday morning.
“I didn’t come down here to win our pool. I came here to get a medal,” said Means, who allowed some of his younger players to take the court for extended minutes at The Milkhouse, which hosts the tournament on the Wide World of Sports Disney property in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
The Kappa Magic finished third at the AAU state championships and then finished second in its pool. “Three, two, one. What comes next?,” Means said with a grin.
A national championship, though, will require much, including a victory on Sunday against the winner of Pool S, which features the Birmingham Metro Express.
