Day 2 Kicks Off For Carolina Teams At Nationals

The first day of AAU’s 17U National Basketball Championship (full coverage here) is in the books, and Friday’s final tally featured a second victory for the North Carolina Gaters (video clip below), who held off the Central New Jersey Hawks 61-51 Friday evening to all but guarantee a top seed when Sunday’s bracketed tournament pairings are finalized. The Gaters finish pool play today with a 7:30 p.m. game against the Rising Stars-Gingel of Metro New York.

The Charlotte Nets also earned a victory in Friday evening’s action. The Nets won 65-63 after dropping an 80-65 game earlier in the day.

The North Carolina Gaters Select lost a Friday afternoon game and now are 1-1 in Pool V. The Select team faces Team Georgia Elite today at noon.

Yet another state team, the Charlotte Royals, won 64-57 Friday night to defend their top seed in Pool X. The Royals face the NYC Jaguars today at 10:30 a.m. and finish the day against No. 2 seed, the Oklahoma Rams.

The Carolina Crusaders also won on Friday. They upended the top seed in Pool W, the San Antonio Roadrunners, 84-68. The Crusaders play today at 10:30 a.m. The Apex Force also won on Friday. The Force deafted the New Hampshire Wildcats, 75-68, and end their pool play tonight with a matchup against Florida’s Fast Track 2008 squad, which is the top seed in Pool BB.

North Carolina’s Kappa Magic also won on Friday. The Magic will face off in two Saturday tilts that will decide their ultimate fate. Meanwhile, the state’s United Celtics have been eliminated from their national title run after dropping two pool play games on Friday.
