Grand Rowan Legion Victory

First place Rowan beat third place South Rowan 14 - 4, ending the game on an eight inning Trey Holmes grand slam, hit high over the Newman Field right field fence.
The game looked like a pitcher’s duel early with South’s Rudy Brown and Rowan’s Cy Young both giving up some hits but getting clutch outs. After starting the fifth up 2 - 1, Rowan broke through against Brown to plate six runs. Micah Jarrett had the huge hit, coming to the plate with two down and the bases loaded after Brown pitched carefully to the dangerous Weston Church, walking him with first base open. Jarrett knocked a clutch 2 RBI double and Holmes and Matt Hall also came through with key RBI hits later in the inning, and Rowan finished the fifth up 8 -1.
South got one back in the sixth on back to back doubles by Daniel Wagner and Jonathon Basinger, but Rowan returned the favor in the bottom half of the inning as Church lined a single into right to score Justin Roland. The game stayed at 9 - 2 until South scored two in the top of the eighth on RBI hits by Randy Shepherd (scoring Justin Lane) and Chase Deal (scoring Daniel Wagner) to get within striking distance. However, Corbin Shive entered in relief and was able to shut the door on South, setting the stage for the Rowan offensive explosion in the eighth.
In the eight, Church, Jarrett (scoring Ridenhour), and Steedley hit three consecutive ropes, loading the based in front of Holmes. Holmes then turned on an inside pitch, pulling it down the right field line for a walk-off (10 run rule) grand slam.
Rowan continues to look like one of the better Legion teams in the state, and South Rowan will also be tough to beat in the playoffs, especially in any game in which Rudy Brown (previously undefeated) is on top of his game on the mound.
