State Games final weekend soccer, hoops, and softball

In High School Men’s Basketball Showcase competition, Dudley, Grimsley, Glenn, Greensboro Day, Northwest Cabarrus, Concord, Trinity, and Nothern Vance emerged from the early rounds to play on Sunday for the championship. On Saturday, Dudley beat Durham Jordan 77 - 52, and then beat Panther Creek 71 - 46. Meanwhile Chapel Hill also won two games, edging Athens Drive, 53 - 52, and then winning again by one point, beating JF Webb 42-41, but fell short of the cut for the final 8. Webb played well all day, but also lost earlier by a single point, 44-43 to an excellent Concord team that won all three of their games on Saturday against Whiteville, Asheboro, and Webb. Riverside was also impressive, beating Wesleyan and Grimsley. Trinity played their way into Sunday’s final 8 championships playoff, beating Gasinger and Northern Durham. Northwest Cabarrus won two games on Saturday to earn a slot in the final 8.
In Saturday action at the High School Women’s Basketball Showcase, the Wesleyan Trojans (video highlights) beat Red Springs 37 - 27, and ultimately beat Riverside for the Bronze. Salisbury High School (video highlights) crushed Parkland 46 - 17, and ultimately won Silver, losing to an excellent Grimsley team in the final. In Boy’s Soccer State All-Star competition, the South All-Stars bested the East All-Stars by a score of 4 - 1. Later on in the day the All-Star competition, the West vs. North came down to a shootout as the scored was tied at one at the end of regulation. The North won in the shootout 6-5.
In the early games of the Soccer U14 Girl’s Challenge, the GCAA Strikers shutout the U13 SSA Lady Pirates 1 - 0, and the U14 OBX Storm (photos and videos) beat the Guild-Rand Panthers (photos and videos) 4 - 2. That game turned out to be a preview of the championship game in which the U14 OBX Storm also prevailed, winning the Gold over the Guil-Rand Panthers 4 - 2.
In the U9 Girl’s Soccer Recreational Division on Saturday, the 98 Greenville Stars proved to be stars as they beat The Strikers 5 - 2, and then shutout 97 SoccerOP Red 3 - 0.
In the U10 Boy’s Soccer Challenge on Saturday, the 97 SoccerOP team doubled up the YCVSC Eagles 8 - 4, and then beat SASL ReMax by a score of 3 -1.
In U8 Boy’s Recreational Tournament action on Saturday, the Greensboro Avalanche (video highlights) beat the FVAA Flash Red 5 - 1, and went on to win Silver. The Wilson Force (video highlights) beat the 98 SoccerOP White team 5 - 3, and went on to win Bronze. Also on Saturday, the Stingers beat the Carolina Hurricanes 4 - 3 (video highlights).
