UNC Tarheels start 2007 College World Series

June 15th, 2007 Posted in NCAA baseball

Update:UNC beat Mississippi State, using a six run sixth inning to come back from an early 4-0 deficit. UNC will face Rice on Sunday. Very much like UNC, Rice came from behind to win - from as many as 6 runs down - with a six run inning. The two teams are also similar in that both are making back-to-back appearances in the College Word Series. Should be an interesting game with both teams using many bullpen innings on Friday.

UNC Chapel Hill faces Mississippi State in Omaha today, as the College World Series opens. It is a repeat visit for the Tarheels as they hope to avenge last year’s championship game loss.

This UNC team is truly a UNC team - all the starters from North Carolina - including NCAA national freshman of the year, Dustin Ackley, whom hit over .400 as a freshman. And with more top prospects from NC high schools such as East Rutherford’s Zeke Blanton and Ryan Leech, and South Caldwell’s Madison Bumgarner committed to coming in next fall if they don’t go pro, UNC will look to continue that trend.

As a university, Chapel Hill is steadily building one of the premiere overall sports programs in the country, fielding elite baseball teams the past few seasons, likely soon to be very good in football (Butch Davis), and of course historically being excellent in men’s basketball, women’s basketball, and women’s soccer.
