Local baseball players await 2007 MLB draft

June 5th, 2007 Posted in MLB draft 2007 - NC players

Madison Bumgarner South Caldwell

Top high school prospects:

Madison Bumgarner (LHP) - South Caldwell High School, Hudson, NC
(Photo above) Projected to go in first 20 picks of 1st round. Superb senior season although may go to UNC Chapel Hill. Ended high school career on a high note as the winning pitcher in the first game of South Caldwell’s 2007 NCHSAA championship series win over Wilmington Ashley, striking out 12. Big, hard-throwing lefty with repeatable delivery. Still developing off-speed repetoire, but has a decent slider.

Justin Jackson (SS) - T.C. Roberson High School, Asheville, NC
Justin is projected to go late in the first round, or early in the second round. Justin played in the 2006 World Junior Championships, is the son of former MLB player Chuck Jackson, and played alongside current Detroit Tiger’s top prospect Cameron Maybin at Roberson.

Sam Runion (RHP) - A.C. Reynolds High School, Asheville, NC
Sam is projected to go in the second or third round of the MLB draft. Sam, a big RHP, had a stellar career at Reynolds, including defeating 2007 NC 4A champion South Caldwell in a head to head matchup with ace Madison Bumgarner. Teammate John Hinson has MLB ability as well, although he may attend Clemson.

David Mailman (1B/LHP) - Providence High School, Charlotte, NC
David is likely a third or fourth round pick, and will go to Wake Forest if he doesn’t go pro.

Trent Rothlin (RHP) - Foard High School, Newton, NC
Tren is projected to go in the 4th or 5th round, and will go to Clemson if he doesn’t go pro.

Top College Prospects
Andrew Brackman (RHP) - NC State University
Almost a certain first round draft pick, and ranked in the top three for potential. Throws in the high 90s, but has split time between baseball and basketball, and battled some injuries during his NC State career.

Josh Horton (SS) - UNC-Chapel Hill
Josh is projected to be a late first round or early second round pick.

Andrew Carignan (RHP) - UNC-Chapel Hill
Andrew is projected to be a second round pick. Andrew projects as a closer with an excellent fastball, but has yet to develop MLB quality off-speed pitches.

Eric Niesen (LHP) - Wake Forest
Eric is projected to be a second round pick. Similar to Andrew Carignan in that he has a MLB quality fastball, but needs work on his secondary offerings.

Luke Putkonen (RHP) - UNC-Chapel Hill
Luke is projected to be a second or third round pick.
