East Rutherford wins 2007 NC high school 2A state baseball championship
June 2nd, 2007 Posted in High School Baseball, NCHSAAIn a terrific matchup of two teams that have dominated NC 2A high school baseball in recent years, the East Rutherford Cavaliers beat the North Lenoir Hawks 8 - 1 in game three of the championship series. The Cavaliers potent offense - 54 regular season home runs - broke the game open with a six-run second inning, keyed by a Seth Baldwin three-run blast. North Lenoir was seeking a third straight title, a rare feat that East Rutherford recently pulled off from 2002 to 2004, making this their fourth championship in six years. The North Lenoir Hawks won the opening game of the series behind Stihl Sowers, but the East Rutherford Cavaliers fought back to win game two as pitcher Tyler Smith capped an undefeated season on the mound by besting North Lenoir and previously undefeated pitcher Brandon Sutton, setting the stage for the East Rutherford game three victory and championship. Zeke Blanton, a UNC commit along with teammate Ryan Leech, was the MVP of the championship.
