NCHSAA NC HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL STATE CHAMPIONSHIP NOTEBOOK

EAST vs. WEST: The Western representative took six of the eight championship games, with only Dudley in the 3-A women and Northern Guilford in the 3-A men winning out of the East.

DOMINATION CONTINUES: the victory by Bishop McGuinness over East Bladen by 64-33 in the state 1-A women’s final at Reynolds Coliseum continued a solid trend for the Western champ in that classification. The West has now won 22 of the last 24 titles in the 1-A classification for women. The only Eastern teams to break through during this time were Union in 1998 and Lakewood in 1994. It was also the fourth consecutive title for Bishop McGuinness in the women’s championships. The longest string of state titles in that department is owned by Hayesville, which won six under coach Darryl McClure from 1988 through ‘93.

GREAT COMEBACK: Mount Tabor threatened to blow the NCHSAA 4-A championship game wide open early as the Spartans scored the first seven points of the game and raced 25-8 lead after one quarter over Terry Sanford. But the Bulldogs battled back and got to within three points with 33 seconds remaining before falling 60-55. Terry Sanford’s defense was a key, limiting Mount Tabor to 20 percent shooting in the second half after the Spartans fired away at a 52% clip in the opening 16 minutes. C.J. Harris of Mount Tabor was the Wendy’s Championship MVP, scoring 20 points, including 12 of 14 from the foul line.

GOING FOR TWO: Forestview, in its 10th year of existence, was going for a fairly rare double on Saturday as the Jaguars had both their women’s and men’s teams in the championship game. Forestview fell to Dudley in the women’s final in a taut 60-58 battle that featured 17 ties and 14 lead changes and no more than six points ever separated the two. Northern Guilford beat Forestview in the 3-A men’s final, 66-54. In the history of NCHSAA postseason play, there have been nine schools that have won a women’s and men’s state title in the same year, the most recent being Thomasville in 2005. Dudley had several stellar performances in the 3-A women¹s final, led by Wendy’s MVP Helen Terry with 16 points, five assists and five steals. Desiree Drayton hauled down 18 rebounds, one of the 15 best rebounding games in the last 24 years of the women¹s finals, and Breonna Patterson led the Panther scoring with 23 points, including three three-pointers.

BIG POINT TOTAL: Aaron Toomey scored 35 points for Bishop McGuinness as the Villains defeated Weldon 72-56 to earn its first NCHSAA men’s 1-A basketball championship. It was the sixth highest point total in the finals by a men’s player since 1986, and the best in a men¹s championship since Michael Joiner poured in 36 for Fayetteville Seventy-First in the 2000 4-A game against Winston-Salem R.J. Reynolds. Toomey hit 19 of 21 foul shots en route to his 35 points.

POWER CONFERENCE: that is a term that has been bandied about a lot as the NCAA brackets were established, but it is a term that could be used to describe the Central Carolina 2-A Conference when it comes to NCHSAA women’s basketball. Salisbury from the CCC earned the league its second consecutive state crown, third in the last six years and ninth title in the last 15 seasons. Salisbury defeated Graham 56-41 as Wendy’s MVP Shanequa (Bubbles) Phifer scored 15 points for Salisbury. The Hornets had to defeat league rival and previously unbeaten East Davidson, the defending state champs and CCC regular-season and tournament champs, in the Western Regional to advance to the state championship game.

A FIRST: Northern Guilford earned its first team title in any NCHSAA sport in its second year of existence as the Nighthawks beat Forestview for the 3-A crown. Chris McCain scored 25 points en route to earning the Wendy’s MVP, hitting 10 of 12 shots from the field. Northern shot 57.1 percent from the floor in the second half. Northern is in its second year of existence and there are no seniors at the school so the team should be very strong next year.

BLEW OPEN A CLOSE ONE: The Lions of West Charlotte blew open a close game in the final period of the 4-A women’s championship battle with Hillside. The game was tied at 50-50 with 7:23 to play and it was 62-59 West Charlotte with 3:36 remaining before the Lions outscored Hillside 16-1 in the final three and half minutes. Christal Caldwell of West Charlotte earned the Wendy’s MVP with 19 points, 12 rebounds and three steals while Asia Williams of Hillside led all scorers with 20 points.

FOOTBALL POWER: Shelby has been known as an outstanding football school but now the Golden Lions have added a basketball state title as the Golden Lions overcame Pittsboro Northwood 62-50 in the 2-A men’s championship. Coach Aubrey Hollifield guided Shelby to the state title but also coaches on the football staff. Eric Mayo led Shelby with 15 points and earned the Wendy’s MVP while Nick Stamp added 15. Jake Houck paced Northwood with 15 points while Terrance Hackney had 11 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

CARY SEIZES FIFTH CONSECUTIVE NC STATE HIGH SCHOOL NCHSAA 4-A WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIP

Four-time defending champion Cary made it five state team titles in a row in convincing fashion on Saturday night in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 4-A wrestling tournament championships at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Cary, under veteran coach Jerry Winterton, placed four wrestlers in the championship matches and went on to record 126.5 points, ahead of Davie County in second place with 98. All four Cary wrestlers in the finals earned state titles, including Ben Creed at 103 pounds, Gabe Brotzman at 152, Matthew Colvard at 160 and heavyweight Eloheim Palma. Palma, a senior and one of the top ranked wrestlers in the nation, completed a perfect 62-0 season. The Cary Imps won the dual team championship earlier this month and have now captured six of the last seven NCHSAA tournament titles.

Concord Jay Robinson was third in the team standings with 78.5 points, just ahead of Hope Mills South View with 77. Fayetteville Pine Forest was fifth with 68 points and Fayetteville Seventy-First sixth at 58.5 and Fayetteville Jack Britt seventh at 55 in a strong showing by Cumberland County teams.

Chapel Hill’s Corey Mock won the 135-pound title to become only the seventh four-time champion in NCHSAA history and was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the championships.

DEFENDING CHAMPION CARY HOLDS TEAM LEAD IN NCHSAA STATE 4-A WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Four-time defending champion Cary holds a 13.5-point lead in the team standings after Friday’s opening day of action in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association wrestling tournament championships at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Cary, under veteran coach Jerry Winterton, tallied 53.5 points to 40 for second-place Davie County. The Imps won the dual team championship earlier this month and have captured five of the last six NCHSAA tournament titles,

Five Cary wrestlers competed in Friday night’s quarterfinals and all five advanced to the semifinals. Benjamin Creed at 103 pounds, Cordale Risk at 130, Gabe Brotzman at 152, Matthew Colvard at 160, and 285-pounder Elohim Palma, ranked by many the top heavyweight in the country, all recorded victories.

Concord Jay Robinson is in third place with 38.5 points, followed by Hope Mills South View (38) and Fayetteville Pine Forest (31).

DEFENDING CHAMP PARKLAND HOLDS LEAD IN NCHSAA 3-A WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Parkland rolled up a solid lead over the field after Friday’s opening day of action in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A wrestling tournament championships at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Parkland, the two-time defending tournament champ which also won the NCHSAA dual team title earlier this month, scored 63 points in the first day to 44 for second-place Mooresville. Trinity was just back in third with 42 points, followed by Hickory St.Stephens with 38 and Northwest Cabarrus with 37.

Parkland’s strength in the middle weights was evident as six Parkland grapplers advanced to Saturday’s semifinals in the weight classes between 125 and 160. Chris Rivas (125), Brian Thompson (135), Luis Ramos (140), Marcus Cain (145), Desean Grimes-Hines (152) and Marciano Ali (160) all advanced out of the quarterfinals.

TIGHT BATTLE SHAPING UP IN NCHSAA STATE 1-A/2-A WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

A very tight battle is brewing for the team championship after Friday’s action in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 1-A/2-A state wrestling tournament championships at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Defending champion Orange, which also won the 2-A dual team title earlier this month, holds the lead over the field by a single point but seven teams are bunched within nine points of the top spot.

Orange has 35 points to 34 for Newport Croatan with Mayodan Dalton McMichael just back in third with 33.5 points. Also in contention are Mount Pleasant (28), Polk County (27), West Lincoln (26.5) and Robbinsville (26).

Although Croatan placed seven wrestlers in the quarterfinals while Orange had four, each had three winners advance to Saturday’s semifinals.

Topsail broke a 16-16 tie and tallied 28 unanswered team points to hold off West Wilkes 44-28 and win the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1-A dual team wrestling championship on Saturday at Thomasville High School.

Topsail was making its fourth consecutive appearance in the dual team championship match, but earned its first state crown.

For the second year in a row, Orange defeated Newton-Conover in a close match to win the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 2-A dual team wrestling championship on Saturday night at Orange.

Orange beat the Red Devils 33-27 for the state title in their home gymnasium after defeating the Red Devils at Newton-Conover in the 2008 final, 29-25.

It was the third NCHSAA dual team title for Orange, which earned the 2005 3-A championship to go with the Panthers’ two straight at 2-A and has a 27-3 mark.

Newton-Conover was in the finals for the third consecutive year and finished with a dual team record of 36-6.

Winston-Salem Parkland earned its third consecutive North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A dual team wrestling championship on Saturday night by rolling past Greensboro Dudley 46-18 at Dudley.

Parkland, winning its fifth state championship in dual-team wrestling in the 20-year history of the tournament, kept its record unblemished on the season at 38-0 while Dudley is 20-6.

Parkland’s Luis Ramos at 145 pounds was named the Most Valuable Performer of the championship match. Ramos helped lead Parkland back after Dudley had opened with a 3-0 lead.

CARY CONTINUES TO DOMINATE NCHSAA 4-A WRESTLING

Cary won its third consecutive North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A dual team wrestling crown and eighth in the 20-year history of the event Saturday night as the Imps rolled past Matthews David Butler 43-18 at Cary High School.

The Imps were appearing in their ninth consecutive championship match and 14th all-time as they ran their perfect record to 36-0 on the season under veteran coach Jerry Winterton.

Butler, which advanced to the state finals after earning the Western Regional title on Friday night with a pair of victories, jumped out to a 6-0 lead with decisions in the first two matches at 135 and 140 pounds. But the Imps got it rolling, paced by the performances of Gabe Brotzman at 152 pounds and Eloheim Palma at heavyweight. The Cary duo shared the Most Valuable Performer award for the championship match.

Texas Longhorns make their BCS case

    3. Dan Wetzel on the BS BCS

Texas toppled Ohio State 21-17 in a thrilling Fiesta Bowl. Texas QB Colt McCoy took the ball on his own 21-yard line with two minutes to go, and marched the Longhorns down the field, all through the air, culminating in a game-winning TD strike to Quan Cosby with 30-seconds to play. McCoy finished his brilliant junior campaign with 413 passing yards, two TD tosses and one rushing TD.

Ohio State had rallied from down 17-6 to take a 21-17 lead with two minutes to go as Daniel Herron rushed into the endzone from 15 yards out. On the previous Buckeye drive, QB Todd Boeckman passed to fellow QB Terrelle Pryor for a five-yard TD. Pryor then attempted to tie the game at 17, but his two-point conversion pass attempt failed, leaving Texas in the lead at 17-15.

Unfortunately, the 12-1 Longhorns, like the Utah Utes and USC Trojans, will not have the opportunity to play for a national championship since the infinite wisdom of BS polls ranked Oklahoma higher than Texas, despite Texas beating the Sooners by 10, and finishing tied with the Sooners for the Big 12 South regular season title.

Of course, Oklahoma and Florida have good cases for their slots in the BS championship, and deserve to be there as much as any team in the nation. The real problem is the lack of a true college football championship, a college football playoff.

How about we take two weeks off the regular season - the week that most teams load up on an inferior opponent, and conference championship week. Those two weeks will be the first two rounds of an eight team playoff, with the final round being the bowl week. Yes, we lose conference championships in some conferences, but it will make the regular season championship that much more signficant, and each regular seaon game that much more meaningful. And, if the conferences decide they really need their conference championship playoff, they’ll find a way to trim a different week.

And we gain an eight-team college football playoff. There will still be arguments about which eight teams go, no matter the system we come up with. But the arguments will center around the last few teams, not the top teams. The #9 team in the country may get robbed in an eight team playoff, instead of the #3 team in the country in the current BS system. This year, we could have had Florida, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, USC, Alabama, Penn State and Texas Tech in our eight-team playoff. We would have a national champion, decided on the playing field.

Instead, Texas, USC, and Utah end the season having proven that they can play with anyone. If the BCS would let them.
