The Georgia High School Association believes that the expanding waistlines among football fans now require an average of 24 inches to sit in high school stadiums. A state senator from Coweta County believes 18 inches is plenty, and he is sponsoring a bill to outlaw GHSA rules that kept Newnan High from having a playoff game at home last month because there weren’t enough 24-inch seats.

Chris Salmons scored 29 points Friday to lead three George Walton Academy players in double figures as the Bulldogs beat Piedmont Academy, 74-65. Matt Reynolds and Jeb Edwards chipped in with 17 points each. Edwards’ damage came mainly from beyond the arc where the senior drained five 3-pointers.

Monroe Area High School’s varsity basketball teams saw lots of action over the weekend. On Friday MAHS swept Region 8-AAA opponent Stephens County at home. Dee Gober scored the winning basket with four seconds remaining in overtime as the Lady Hurricanes nipped the Maidens, 59-58.

Tank Sessions scored with seven seconds remaining in the game to lift Griffin High School’s boys basketball team past Southside 57-56 Tuesday at home. Sessions finished the game with a team-high 18 points, while Shaq Barber had 15 points.
