Five in running for first state titles

The high school championship games are set and the story lines are in place. Five of the 10 finalists have never won a state title. They are North Gwinnett, Ware County, Carver-Columbus, Emanuel County Institute and Wilcox County. That’s the most for a championship weekend since 1999.

Pam and Larry Felts drove 200 miles Saturday to watch the Cook High Hornets and their daughter Jill, a cheerleader, play and perform in the Georgia Dome.They also came in 2000 and 2001, when their oldest daughter was a cheerleader for Cook teams that also made the Dome semifinals.

The clock finally struck midnight on the Cook Hornets Saturday, as their improbable postseason came to an end in the Georgia Dome. Lovett handed Cook (9-4) its fourth and final loss of the season, 29-16.

Cougars end winning streak with loss at Lithia Springs

The Lithia Springs Lions ended the Newnan Cougars three-game opening season winning streak with a convincing 74-58 win Saturday night. The Lady Cougars won their game over the Lady Lions, 59-50. The Lithia Springs boys came into the contest ranked number four in Quad A.

Heritage boys even record at 2-2

Michael McGraw scored 21 points and Cliff Cranford provided what head coach Phillip Myles called a “defensive spark,” as The Heritage School’s boys basketball team evened its record with a 61-58 victory over Flint River Academy Saturday in non-region action at home.

E. Coweta falls behind early, loses to McIntosh

The East Coweta Indians found themselves in an early hole Saturday evening and tried to rally but hit a wall in the fourth period as they dropped a 79-58 non-region game to the McIntosh Chiefs. For the third straight game, the Indians were faced with a double digit deficit to start a game as the Chiefs opened with 13 straight points before Kenny Patrick converted a basket with three minutes remaining in the first period.
