Monroe Area High School took both ends of a varsity basketball doubleheader Saturday against cross-county rival Social Circle. The Lady Purple Hurricanes got 16 points and 10 rebounds from Dee Gober in a 67-55 victory.

Needing three points to tie the game, the Central boys basketball team got the ball where it wanted it and into the hands of their hottest shooter in the final seconds of Tuesday night’s game. Eldon Finch, who had hit seven three-pointers for the Lions, had an open look from the left corner, but his shot fell short and bounced off the rim as Central lost 61-56 in a non-region game against South Paulding at home.

Rebel defense too much for Mustangs

In a battle of county rivals, Effingham County defeated South Effingham 50-30 on Tuesday at The Corral. After winning the opening tip, the Rebels took the lead and stayed in front the whole game. At halftime, the Rebels were up 27-12. The Rebels opened the door for the Mustangs in the second half, when their starters got into foul trouble. Senior Marie Fogle fouled out, and the rest of the starters had three or four fouls each.
