Apparently, tails sometimes fails. Buford, whose coach Jess Simpson declared that “tails never fails,” lost the coin flip Saturday that determined where its quarterfinal Class AA playoff game against Charlton County will be held. So the Wolves and their fans can brace themselves for a five-hour-plus road trip to Folkston, in Georgia’s southernmost county.

Peachtree Ridge set the standard for fourth seeds after earning a share of the Class AAAAA championship last season. The Lions tried to repeat the feat this season, but their 23-20 overtime loss Friday to the team with the other share, Roswell, means that only one of the 40 fourth seeds to start the playoffs has survived to see the quarterfinals.

Carrollton stifles Westminster

Carrollton (11-1) held Westminster to two first downs for a 22-0 victory. The home team got 95 yards on 16 carries and a touchdown from Courtney Mabry. Wes Dothard added 64 yards and a touchdown for Carrollton. Westminster finished 9-3.

There’s being neighborly and then there’s really helping out the community. And luckily for Carrollton coach Rayvan Teague, his neighbor just happened to be the good-luck charm for Carrollton Saturday morning. Teague met with Carver-Columbus coach Dell McGee at 8 a.m. Saturday in LaGrange for a coin flip to determine which team will host the third-round playoff game next Friday.

Saturday’s second-round Division II playoff matchup between Valdosta State and Catawba was every bit as close as a battle between two of the top 12 teams in the country was supposed to be. At least in the first half.
