Athlete of the Week

Rematch the theme in AAAAAk
| ajc.com

It’s about advancing, not getting revenge, but the coaches at Roswell, Brookwood, Grayson and Harrison admit that history is making their jobs easier this week. As the high school football playoffs resume Friday with the first of 40 second-round games statewide, four in Class AAAAA have the quality of a semifinal and the spice of a rematch. The Bears returned just one starter on offense and four starters on defense from last year’s 11-1 squad, but Griffin finished 9-1 to earn its seventh consecutive state playoff berth and fourth consecutive subregion title with mostly junior and sophomore starters.

Outsized, outplayed and outscored. Those three elements knocked the Tigers out of the playoffs when the Wildcats handed them a resounding 42-0 loss Friday night. While the Wildcats were plagued by penalties, the Tigers stumbled with a few too many turnovers. With 10:26 left in the first half, the Tigers already trailed 21-0.

For the second consecutive season, Statesboro bowed out in the first round of the state playoffs with a double-digit loss, falling short of expectations of not only fans, but the coaches and players themselves.
